I finally got a chance to do some serious shooting with my M-70 Safari 375 H&H, (The lefty I bought in October). What a blast!
I put a 1-4X Leupold on it and shot it at 100 yards using the Hornady 270 grain SP's with some old IMR 3031 and the damn thing was shooting better than I was. The 3 shot groups averaged less than 1.5" and some of them were less than 1".

Now, do I shoot it as is or get it bedded?

OK, I'm computer illiterate, what's showing is exactly what I typed and I copied it from a quote off of another post that had a picture in it. What do I have to do to get it to show up inside the post. <A HREF="http://photobucket.com/albums/v214/Fjold/375group.jpg

Your URL was in the wrong format.

Personally, I only use 300gr. bullets in my .375H&H; try them before doing any additional modifications.

Thanks George, what do I have to add to get the picture to show up right?

I only shot the 270's for barrel break in, but I want to use the 260 grain Partitions for hogs next month. I'll probably load a bunch of those up and see how they do.

If it's shooting that well, I would leave it alone! Work up some loads & go pig hunting. If you need someone to tag along, drop me a line. I get up to Tehachapi every month to visit my dad.

What load were you using with the 3031? I could not read it in your picture. 3031 would certainly not be my first choice of powders, but you can't argue with the results! I am using 260 gr. Nosler Partitions so I am interested in trying 3031.

Thanks George, we've successfully proved that I'm a computer idiot.

Peter, the load with in the picture is 64 grains, 65 grains shot right into an inch also and I didn't see any pressures signs. The only reason I used the 3031 is that I had a 20 year old can laying around that I just wanted to burn up.

That is the bullet I used in the .375 to take my elk this year. I used it over 67 gr. of Varget. You might like that load.

take the barreled action out of the stock.....you may discover that it's already bedded in glass...or something similar....if the barrel is floating.....don't muck with it.

If it was mine I'd be happy as a lark and would still bed the action and float the barrel.

And I use 78 grains of IMR 4350 behind a 300 gr. Nosler Partition for 2775 fps and groups that fit into a thumbnail. This is a load approved of in one of my reloading manuals (I don't remember which one!!) that shows no pressure signs and boy does it ever shoot! Seriously, if you intend to take the baby to Africa, forget all the lighter bullets. Just load up with whichever 300-350 gr it likes best and let fly. It is always most prudent to be ready for the biggest, nastiest thing you are liable to run into rather that worry about shooting something little "too hard".

Thanks guys,
Vapodog, I took the action out of the stock the first day I got it and found the rubbery hot glue that Winchester "beds" with now. I had to remove a dribbled line of hot glue that was strung between the recoil lugs to get the action to sit square in the stock. I can get a piece of typing paper under the barrel to within 3" of the action but I feel it dragging as I do so. The paper stops sliding noticeably on the right side of the chamber area and I can slide further up the left side over an inch. I'll probably get it bedded correctly and then work up my light partition loads and some soft and solid 300 grain loads.
I enjoy shooting it so much that will be the fun part. Off of the bench it actually feels easier to control than both my 300WSM and my 7 Mag because of the extra weight that it has. I'll have to see if the 300 grain loads change that though.

Fjold,

I find shooting my 375 "easier" to shoot than my 300WSM as well. It is also more accurate at this point as I have found that it is in love with 300gr nosler partitions. Still trying to figure out the 300WSM.

I have had great success with Nosler Partitions and Accubonds in the 260 grain. I ordered them from the Shooters Pro Shop. they are factory seconds, but they seem to shoot well in my Safari Express and Whitworth

Mostly I feel if it ain't broke then don't fix it...but in this case I like a glass bedded rifle as they are more prone to be stable and not change POI during a hunt...

I have never hurt a rifle by glass bedding it. they either shoot the same or they shoot better...When the barreled action is correct, then its going to shoot...

I would check and see how it is bedded and glass it the same way, either tight, floated or pressure on the forend..Glass the recoil lug area, two inches of the barrel and the tang, then the barrel as it is now. You can cross bolt the action if you like, I do but its not necessary with a glassed bedded 375 H&H...

HAVE A GOOD HUNT.

Ray, I didn't think about glassing the tang but I'll let my gunsmith know. My M-70 already has two cross bolts installed with nice pretty little engraved heads.

Rusty, I also order the Nosler seconds from Shooter's Proshop and just sent an order in this morning for 8 boxes of assorted calibers and weights.

Bwanahile, my 300WSM is a Savage and it absolutely loves the 180 grain Hornady Interbonds with a full charge of IMR4831.

Fjold, I think that you should go ahead and bed the rifle. If you don't you'll always wonder if it could shoot even better if you did.........DJ

I dropped it off last night at my gunsmith's shop. That's where I was handling the 7 Lb 2 oz, braked 378 Wby mag, he had just built.
