my winny safari 375 is a bit tired, stock cracked ,
missing iron sight in the rear, and possibly a bent barrel courtesy of a horse who had an itch and had to roll.
how can I improve on an already great rifle, any suggestions will be appreciated. I,m a hunter not a gunsmith so have limited knowledge. all I know is sight, squeeze and field dress.

With a bent barrel and a cracked stock you don't have alot of options. To keep cost down find a new take off barrel stock. Or build your ideal rifle using a new barrel and custom stock.

As a general rule, people are nuts!

The stock is easy enough to find, I sold one few months back for $175 or so and there were other for sale on E-bay as well. You could go with a synthetic also which is ugly but you will never crack it again.
Lay a straight edge along your barrel from all positions of the compass to see if it is bent if you can't spot it from just sighting down it. If barrel is bent you have options.
Order new barrel, shop for one taken off another rifle ( sometimes these are new). To straighten yours is impossible if not just plain risky. Sights are available through Brownells or Midway.
Or plan "B" sell it for what you can and buy a new or used one.
Are ya sellin'?

Don,

Just overhauled 2 rifles identical to yours for a customer. Call me this next week and let me see what I can do for you.

Buy CZ550 or ZKK602, these are superior hunting rifles to Winchester! You know, stronger action, the best scope mouning setup in mass-produced gun business, iron sights,... Your Winnie is a gonner anyway. Frowner

Sounds to me as if the best upgrade for your .375 just might be a .416 Big Grin

Especially, if you're going to rebarrel it anyway ...

Rebuild your M70! Lots of barrels out there - Call Dennis Earhardt in Helena Mt but be ready to talk. He'll rebarrel for about 400, plus upgrades. And do any other metal or stock work you want. He's building a wildcat called the 411 Ryan Express which will do close to the 375 HH with 300 grains about 2350, plus 2150 with 400 grains. Based on the 375/400 belted case (same as a 411 hawk). Little recoil - lots less than a 375 with 300 grainers. Can use 405 winnie dies. I'm going to have one built myself with a stainless barrel for an all weather elk rifle. I do have a M70 classic synthetic stock I will sell cheap - 50 bucks, that has been glassed for a 375 classic action.. I put a laminated from Richards on mine. A bit of work, but the rifle is really shootable now. Still groups about 1.5 MOA with justa bout anything.

sell your old, tired winch here - they'll gobble it up for pieces and parts.

then take the money and buy a real rifle.
