Bringing my Double and a .416 class bolt gun as a backup on a DG hunt and perhaps a few plains game. Will be loading CEB's in the Double and was thinking the same for my bolt gun. I have asked this question of Michael458 but thought I would throw it out to the masses...... Would the 370gr .416 NonCon be limited in it's range? For Buff and their ranges they will be as advertised, but how often am I looking at shots on PG greater than 150yrds where ballistically the bullet should start to be compromised. I realize that I can pop on a Talon Tip to up the BC and give me the ballistics that I want but that would be for the chambered round only as I am under the impression the Non Con and tip will not fit into the magazine. My other option would be to load the NorthFork 400gr soft instead of the Non Con. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated

Personally, I wouldn't be concerned for any shot under 300 yards - which is about the longest shot I would take because that's the farthest I practice. If you're thinking of longer shots because the kudu of your dreams is there at 500 yards and no way of getting closer, then my choice would be something more aerodynamic. Like a Barnes TSX or Swift. Only you can honestly answer what you are capable of doing. Me? Id go with the Non-cons and not worry one bit. Personally I always thought the hunt was in getting closer not in shooting farther... CCMDoc (from another post)... how did you end up packing your rifles did you break down your doubles? and what case did you use??

Yes, I absolutely agree with you, getting closer is what its all about but you asked about longer distance. Biebs helped me out again. I used his 1650 case for the broken down doubles and Tuffpak for the bolts. I as well am not much considering shots beyond 300 meters as I then start to consider it to be more shooting and less hunting. I still like to have a flat shooting bullet when shooting beyond 200 meters so I like high BC bullets for that If you can't fit Talon tipped cartridges in your magazine, then I would just put one in the round you chamber. You really should only need that anyway when shooting a PG If you want some special high BC bullets for longer range shooting, I would use the Barnes 400 grain TSX FB. They are also coming with a 350 grain Tipped TSX BT, but I can't find the BC of that bullet.

I would probably not shoot any .416 hunting rifle at over 200 meters period. That would be a hail mary shot anyway given that my .416 is always sighted for 50 yrds. Use the .416 for the ranges it was designed for 25-75 meters. If you expect to shoot plains game use the right tool (a fast .30 caliber) with a 3-9X scope set on 6X permanently. On my first hunt in Africa I was really surprised that I had to shoot at plains game at 300 meters and more seemingly all the time. Everyone told me Oh No, 200 meters and less. I guess all the stupid ones were gone by the time I got there. -Rob Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large numbers to do incredibly stupid things- AH (1941)- Harry Reid (aka Smeagle) 2012 Nothing Up my sleeves but never without a plan and never ever without a surprise!

Zephyr, Personally I’d limit the NonCon HPs to a maximum 200yds where trajectory and wind drift won’t be as critical…unless you do plenty of practice at longer ranges. I shot one of Michael458’s M70s in .416 B&Ms with 1-4x scope in June 2010 across canyon at approximately 325yds with a slight West to East breeze… Definitely had bullet drift and holdover with the different bullet weights/nose shapes at that distance. Personally I thought the 300gr and 350gr TSX bullets did better than the semi-spitzer nose shapes at this distance and I would have zero qualms using the .416 B&M cartridge with either bullet at that distance against game. As a side note, a friend was extremely accurate shooting his .375 Ruger with 2x scope using 300gr RN Hornady bullets @ 2400fps at the same target and distance – but he’s had plenty of practice with this combination. Myself, I’d have liked some in the 6x to 8x magnification range at that yardage (old tired eyes). If you’re open to another monometal alternative, you might consider the 350gr .416 CEB MTH-V11 copper bullet… Here’s a link to the CEB page along with a brief description: https://cuttingedgebullets.com...d=action&key=MTH_V11 The price for 50 will be a few $ more than the NF SS bullets but they’re certainly not outrageous in price. I shot a Baboon with my 416 at 250 yards a couple of years ago using a plain jane soft nose. Just held over his back about 3 inches. I have a Boone and Crocket reticle now on my 416 and just need to see where each line hits. The 416 with a non con should be pretty flat shooting. Any shot at game over 350 yards is kinda a hail mary with a big bore.

'tis true...though calibers from .358 through .435 are really just mediums/heavy mediums so the hail marys should be little further distance and a bit crisper with the trajectory. Jim "Life's hard; it's harder if you're stupid" John Wayne

On BCs with 416's: The Barnes TTSX 350 grain has a BC of .444. In the rigby one can load this with 102.5 grains of Reloder17 for a velocity of 2800-2850 fps. That is a wonderful tool for longrange antelope. If you have the talon tip available, then I would opt for a 325 grain + talon. That can be loaded to 2900 fps and no 400 yard Kudu will have a chance. Without the talon tip I would use tipped 350 grain TTSX for plains game, and then the 'non-con' for buffalo under 150 yards. +-+-+-+-+-+-+ "A well-rounded hunting battery might include: 500 AccRel Nyati, 416 Rigby or 416 Ruger, 375Ruger or 338WM, 308 or 270, 243, 223" -- Conserving creation, hunting the harvest.
