We know velocty helps on leopard. What about using Hawk 350 or 400 grain bullets to up the velocity. .025 jackets should open well. Anyone done it? Thought is to save taking a light rile in .300 or .30-06 | ||

AfricanHunter I have used the Hornady 350 RN in the 45/70, the 458 Win and in my 450 No2 double. I have shot several deer and wild pigs with the 450 No2 at a velocity of 2330 fps. It works like the Hammer of Thor. I have also taken deer wild pigs and impala with a Hawk .366 285 gr. .025jkt bullet in my 9,2x74R double rifle. When I hunted leopard in Zim 2004 [ no shots fired ] I used the 9,3 with a Hawk in the right bbl, and a 286 gr Woodleigh soft in the left. I feel that a 350 gr bullet in the 458 would hit a leopard like a Nuclear Warhead. I think you have an excellent idea. I have a couple of friends that have 470 Chapuis doubles, I have advised them to scope them and use 350 grain Hawks for deer, wild pigs, black bear and leopard. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY | |||

Plum forgot about the Hornady in my thinking. Thanks for reminding me. I've got some on the shelf! Think the Rem 405 grain for .45-70 may be to fragile, but maybe not. | |||

The 405gr Rem bullet is not bad for a cheap plinker. I have shot one 200 lb boar with it, from my Lott at 2112 fps. Did a good job, but I would not push them very much past that speed. Hog Killer PS: If i had the time and money to go after a leopard, I would go ahead and spend another two bits and at least use the 350gr Hornady.
