Does anyone have pictures or plans for a standing position shooting bench? I am going to build one for our club this spring to support the big bore shooters. I have a pretty good idea of want I am going to build but want to see what ideas are out there..

Excellent idea, I have been leaning against one of the support post that hold up the roof over our shooting benches.

Why would you need a special design? Well maybe.... Since range space is at a premium, you might build some pockets into a regular height bench that will accept the legs of a second mini-table to make up the few feet. Then when not needed, that space can be used as a normal bench.

I think it would be best if it was wide & steady enough that you could lean your full body weight on the table and not have it tilt or shift.

I think it was Rich, IdahoSharpshooter, who had a bench that would clamp to an existing post on one side, then had legs on the other. Would work perfect if you've got a covered shooting area. I'm thinking I need to be thinking on this as well. Maybe a platform, with braced up legs on one side, made so they'll fold along the bottom side of the platform for flat storage. The the other side might have a horizontal leg or bracket that would stick out and could be used to clamp to a post of non-descript dimension, universal fit. Hmmmm.... You got me thinking. I'll try to sketch something up on AutoCAD in the next couple days to see what we could do to make this work.

This is exactly why I posted the question!!

Keep up the great feedback! Lots of great ideas out there - we just need to pull them together!

I'm also trying to put together a Big Bore shoot event at our club this summer and hope to attract in shooters from around North East Ohio - sort of like the get togethers that the other Big Bore groups put on..

Shooting the British Double Rifle, vol.2 has several pictures of standing upright styles of shooting benches.

They all seem to feature vinyl covered foam where both the weak side hand and the weak side elbow contact the bench.

The Holland & Holland video shows their take on the concept.

I use shooting sticks.

That's all I'm ever going to get when the chips are down, so I figure I had better get used to them.

I practice off sticks as well. The tough part is working up handloads on the bench...

Scott: Another alternative is the upright seated bench, a small "podium" that you simply set on top of the regular shooting bench. You make it at a height comfortable for fully upright seated shooting (as opposed to crawling low and forward into the rifle and rest and taking the full punch in normal fashion) or high enough to shoot fully standing.

At my club they have shooting benchs with a roof over them. If you want to stand you can lean against one of the supporting 4x4.

Scott,

I'm gonna work up some drawings on AutoCAD on a portable model that I can take to the range(s) where I shoot. I'll create a PDF file for them and make them available to anyone who wants them. I'll try to start on them tomorrow night. John's mailing me copies of some pics as well, so gonna use those for ideas as well.

What I have in mind is something that will have a folding leg frame on one side, and will have an arm sticking out on the left that would be clamped to a 4x4 or 6x6 wood post on the covered shooting line. I want it to be made of all lumber so that it's something most anybody could build in their driveway or garage. I could use some steel, but everyone doesn't have easy access to that.

I'll keep ya'll posted on this. Hopefully have something by the weekend or by Monday.

OK guys, I got a plan view of the top done for ya'll to take a look at and comment on. Problem is I can attach a PDF file to a reply here. And apparently I can upload a PDF to photobucket. I'm gonna see if I can figure out how to convert it to a JPG image or something so that I can post it here. Any ideas let me know.

OK, found a converter. Take a look at the plan view and let me know your ideas.

Probably best to save it to your compute and view it that way or print it.

Thanks,

I have a VRS shooting rest that attaches to a tripod and is adjustable to various heights. It is very well made and comes with a tough ballistic carrying case. Works well with precise adjustments for sighting in and have shot Heavy Nitro doubles from it. It is advertised to shoot up to heavy 50 Cal BMG rifles from it.

Yes, I see what you mean. A standing bench would definitely help to attenuate recoil while working up loads.
