I have recently run accross a Custom Remington 700 in 458 WM at a very good price and I was wondering what some of you think about it. Details: 24"barrel, 10lbs 1oz, 13" LOP over pad, dual cross bolts w/ ebony plugs, ebony fore-end tip, 3 position safety, two panel checkered bolt knob, rear island sight and front ramp sight, Dakota Arms bottom metal, steel grip cap, inletted rear swivel and barrel band front swivel, ebony inlay on bottom of fore-end, pillar bedding, no checkering and all bottom metal unblued. If I decide to buy it I will most likely have it drill for 458 Lott, have a Sako claw extractor put in and have some mercury recoil reduces installed (mostly because I have had shoulder surgey) What do y'all think about it, pros and cons? LOP is probably too short, and the source of the barrel is unknown (is it a Pac-Nor or an Adams & Bennett?). Also, the fact that the bottom metal is unblued could mean that other things have been left undone (wrist reinforcement, for one). I'd look for a Model 70, Whitworth, or a CZ .458 and set it up the way YOU want. George

.. Alot of time spent on stuff like ebony fore ends doesn,t help it shoot or work ....I like the short LOP , George is a great big guy ,,,,, Things it HAS TO HAVE it Must have a 2nd recoil lug affixed to the barrel about 6 inches ahead of the receiver . The action should be completely bedded , but it needs to be relieved at the rear tang and bottom metal tang , and all action and bottom metal surfaces that arn,t square to the bore must be relieved ... Also are you sure there are cross bolts under the ebony plugs .... Many stocks have been put on large caliber rifles that didn,t have anything .. It,s pretty common for Remington 458 s to break their stocks ........ A muzzle brake will help save both your shoulder and the stock ..... Does it have a Super Grade or banded sling eye on the barrel ... If you had shoulder surgery ,why do you want a Lott ........... Develop a 400 gr load with GS HV , Swift or some other 400 gr bullet for the Win mag , which will easily do 2380 and most of the time over 2400 Fps ,and the recoil is much less than the 500 gr loads ..... Just my opinions ..... Myself I would get a CZ .... .If it can,t be grown , its gotta be mined ....

I have a Model 70 in .458 WM opened up to accept the Lott cartridge for sale in the classifieds for less than than what you are likely to spend on this project - an it has the controlled feed action you are wanting. https://forums.accuratereloading.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/2711043/m/151108769

Dogcat, Nice rifle/package you have listed but I am a lefty. If I wasn't a lefty I would jump all over it. Good Hunting,

If it were a finished rifle, I'd say it sounds like a good deal, but you're going to have to do some work to get it field-ready. I suppose it depends on what they want for it. No matter what you do, I'd say get everything in a Lott. More versatility, performance potential, and resale value if you ever decide to go that way with it. _____________________________________________________ No safe queens!

If I was going to build a lefty 458 Win Mag , I would start with a RugerM77 MK 2 in 7 mag .... .If it can,t be grown , its gotta be mined ....
