Need Help!
Had a LH 416rm built on a Weatherby accumark stock & action.
It kicks the snot out of me.
Do the mercury tubes really work & can they be installed into a synthetic stock?
Tried looking for a different styled stock, but have had no luck, Weatherby stocks seem to all be designed the same no matter who makes them.
The rifle shoots well, I just don't enjoy shooting it.
I have a Winchester 70 in 375H&H LH that I love & enjoy shooting.
Would really like to tame this rifle down some.

Mercury or tungsten reducers help, but aren't magic solutions. You can add a muzzle brake or lead weight to the stock, too.

Is your concern off the bench or off hand?

That round, the 416 RM, is one of the worst felt recoil rounds going. When someone brings me a rifle they want tamed there are several things that can be done. The biggest thing to me is stock fit. In your case the Weatherby stock has about as good a shape as any. Too long or too short of a stock will increase felt recoil. Next add a good energy absorbing recoil pad, something like an XLT (my favorite) or a Decelerator. I don't know the intended use of your gun so if you can stand to add weight this will help. Such as milling a groove in the forehand and epoxy lead shot in it. A recoil reducer can be added when you add the new recoil pad. All this will probably reduce your felt recoil by roughly 10%. Because the 416RM is a high pressure round it works well with a muzzle brake. When you install the muzzle brake also get an end cap to use when hunting. When you are hunting you never feel recoil, your mind is out at the target not back at the gun as it is when shooting at paper. The muzzle brake alone will reduce your recoil by 35% taking it down to below your .375. Many people don't like muzzle brakes, especially if the guy on the bench beside you has one. They work well but increase muzzle blast. Only use it where you and the people around you can wear ear protection. There are no quiet muzzle brake so don't fall for using an expensive one to get less muzzle blast. In test, the best at reducing muzzle blast only reduced it 6%, but recoil reduction was decreased to about 25%. I install Harrell precision brakes and recommend them. Muzzle brakes never hurt accuracy and often increase it. Good Luck.....Tom

There was a concern on the Australian and New Zealand Forum that mercury reducers may not be allowed on airlines.

I have mercury and mechanical reducers in some of my rifles and shotguns. They both work, maybe because they add weight. I don't know if one is better that the other.

Thanks for the help.
I am taking my rifle to the man that built it for me tomorrow to have a muzzle brake installed.
He was concerned about placing a mercury tube inside a synthetic stock because he felt with the recoil of the 416 it may not stay in place in the foam filled stock.
If the brake will bring it down to 375 levels I will be happy with it.
He will make me a cap to place over the threads while hunting with the brake off.

If we can't get it tamed enough to suit me, I'll just have a 404 Jeffrey built on a Rem 700 action.

My .416 Rem. Mag. is a pussycat. Admittedly, it is a bit heavy for calibre, but it is one of my favorite rifles to shoot; even off the bench.

My 416 RM made me decide to give up my 30 caliber bolt rifles completely . I don't have a 300, a 338, or a 375 anymore.

My 416 is just a Winchester Safari Express but in Winchesters good stock that I think David Miller did some consulting on . I was really surprised at the 416s recoil compared to some of those above.

While I was thinking for a while that I would add a brake to it I never did.

But I have now started thinking about taking it in for a stock change and bedding into a McMillan, and adding the brake just for bench shooting . As it is it is more of an African rifle, but with some work it can be all time go everywhere rifle along with its partner in 7MM RM.

They have become my 2 rifle battery for hunting .

I had only shot 1 416rm before I had mine built & don't remember it kicking as hard as mine does.
For those that enjoy shooting their 416's, I am happy for you & trying to get mine to that point as well.
I dropped it off at my gunbuilders shop yesterday, well see what happens.
