Re: A huge 4 bore pump gun.
Oldsarge I never met Saunders face to face but is probably the guy.
The gun he did has surfaced here in conversation several times. There was an article in one of our sporting mags that I wish I still had and the going price for anyone else wanting one was $50,000 Australian.I think the cast bullets were 2000gn at 1250 fps, smokeless and black loads.
It was a real 4 bore, bullets .98" or so from memory.
Karl.
From the last 4 bore thread here are 4 bore
barrel makers again

GrandpasezKarl--I will check with Krieger tomorrow, so folks will know what's available and prices.I also got some info on
the ones Ross and Lamont have and will do some checking
to see if there are anymore of the falling block actions
they used available..Ed.

GrandpasezA 4 bore size action that John could build, if he had it in hand to program the machines?? Will see if we can get
close to one..Ed

Nishoba01Those caritrges look absolutely stunning Mr. Hubel!

Just to let you know I am still very much interested in obtaining 30 of your .700 HE cases as well as a single shot break-action 4 bore we talked about a few weeks ago.
Sorry I haven't posted much since then, just a wee bit busy with my job/kids ect.

GrandpasezLarry--Big Al- Mike-Tonto-- ALL--
Got some more info and here is another picture of falling block. It is Kent Lamont's gun,
that C Watts took pictures of.
Clayton Nelson made action and he doesn't make them anymore....I am checking to see if
a way can be found to get it reproduced. It is a scaled up
Farquarson. They made it a 1.000 inch bore not a smaller
one.(Geez all great minds think alike). They used turned cases.I am in favor of going bigger than the shotshell
.935-.938 bore size also. And there still is Borchardt,
And those building there own actions, and Big AL and
Mike with the Tulas to be set up with good 4 bore brass and barrel combination.
Now about barrels.Pacnor said they can make 4 bore barrels,
but the rifling would only be .010 as they use button.
we'd have to pay for tooling.Krieger makes a .936 4 bore,
and said they'd make bigger bores if we buy tooling. They use cut rifling could make rifling proper debth for that big a bore(.012 to .016).And Pacnor said we should consider Krieger for that reason.Krieger would give a break for
bulk order, so if enough are doing it it will offset tooling.Greggs friend wants to make barrels so it
is going to get interesting this year, I think. In pic you can see loaded rounds in the bag, in foreground..Ed

That falling block 4 bore is absolutely beautiful Mr. Hubel, is there any way you can get the cost of that?
Hell, I may decide to just go with that design rather then what we talked about earlier.

GrandpasezLarry--I am waiting to hear back from a couple people
on that.Kent mentioned someone who might build them for real big bucks(40k plus), complete guns.I will try to see if we can get a deal for lot less money to have someone with equipment to reproduce it so folks can get action reasonable and do their own.Like buying Borchardt.
15 March 2004, 08:22
Nishoba01I hope you can get someone to do it for less, otherwise I'll have no money left for ammo.

15 March 2004, 10:19
Nishoba01Better yet Mr. Hubel, what would be the cost of his action alone? You know, no engravings/inlaying ect.
Larry A.
15 March 2004, 11:07
GrandpasezThat is problem as Kent makes no actions and the one fellow he knows, wants to make complete guns.He is checking around
and so am I.No idea of price the action alone can be built for, until John or someone with the machines looks at it.We will just keep working on it, and all other 4 bore stuff.Ed
15 March 2004, 13:53
Nishoba01What would be your bet guess as to what speed the 2000 grain bronze projectile will exit a 30" barrel using the full 700gr's (base to bullet of powder?
15 March 2004, 15:51
GrandpasezA 700 gr compressed load of the right ball powder will get
you 3100 fps with 2000 gr bullet. That load should get the
action seated good in a stock..Ed.
That's 20mm cannon power Larry and requiring a gun weighing around 100lbs..
Karl.
15 March 2004, 19:02
smallfryEd.... Giles Whittome Makes a Falling block 8,4 and even 2 bore based off of the henry Harpoon action, which is quite a bit trimmer then that one in the pic.
15 March 2004, 19:31
GrandpasezSmallfry--We are checking on that also. His price is
high, but a great quality product.I inquired for one big enough for my 700 HE and our 12GA FH last year.Ed.
15 March 2004, 19:54
smallfryYour 700 might fit into his *Sherley* Action falling block, as I think he has one for a 700 N.E.
I Really like his 4 bore and would love to buy a barrled action, however... I have just started my breach and lock for my 4 bore BP, and last night I thought of a new falling block with a traditional look for a 4 bore that has fewer internal parts. This design has a exposed hammer. My 4 bore will be a true 4 at 1.005~
You might try Apex also... if I remember right they work on some 20mm barrels
there abouts.
16 March 2004, 06:12
Nishoba01Ok, well what would the FPS be if you were to only use 90% (570 grains)? I would like to achieve between 2100-2200fps Mr. Hubel. Would that be more managable out of a 30-32 lbs. gun?
What's the heaviest bullet weight you recomend to be fired from this monster?
