Looking at a pretty good deal on some Hornady 270 gr. SP's to shoot in my .375 H&H.

From those who have actually used these bullets, what are the suitable uses for them? Is this going to be a gopher bullet or can I shoot the charging buff with one? Or maybe several? Wink

I realize the truth is probably somewhere between those extremes, but if you've got experience with them, I'd like to hear your opinions.

Thank you very much, and Merry Christmas! Smiler

I've shot quite a few Hornady 270 Grain interlocks and finally came to the decision that if a 375 H&H is needed to hunt "it" then a better bullet is also to be desired.

Not that the Hornady is a bad bullet but why wouldn't I use a A-Frame, Northfork or Trophy bonded bullet?

If I don't need a bullet like that then I probably didn't need the 375 H&H either.

I only ever killed two animals with the Hornady bullet.....both whitetails and I'd have been better off using their 270 150 grain interlock instead.

The Hornady 270's are my paper-punching bullet in my 375s. They are VERY accurate in every 375 I've ever tried them in. I'd use them on any soft-skinned non-dangerous game.

The 375 H&H came out in 1911 and has earned its reputation with a whole lot lower quality bullets than these. The old-timers would have loved to have bullets like these Hornadys.

Works for me: One shot kills on Moose and elk. Very good penetration and weight retention. Broke shoulders, exploded the heart and nicejob on lungs as well. Wouldn't use on any African game. No experience with bears.

I would not be hesitant to use them for any of the African plains game or in the lower 48. I used them in both 180gr in a 300Mag and the 270's in a 375 H&H and they punched right through Moose without a problem. The few bullets I did recover were around 60% weight retention, which really ain't bad for standard bullets. I have since moved to the 260gr Accubond bullet and have had great success with it on African plains game up to Zebra. It might be slightly better than the Hornady but I don't think a game animal will know the difference. I say buy them if you are getting a good deal, but no dangerous game lest you be enjoying the last hunt.

I used them. Never shot a buffalo with them but did kill several kudu, eland, elk, etc. and never had a problem. Thought they were damn good bullets and would use them again in a 375 H&H.

I,ve shot quite alot of them. But not on anything big.......I did see a mooses neck a client shot with one in a 378 Whby from about 80 yrds.as I remember.....It didn,t exit and it was kind of broadside......The moose died immediatly,, but the bullet didn,t exit, I have had the 300 gr hornady rn sp in 375 chunk in forked horn blacktails... Same with the 350 gr 458 RN SP bullet... But I have shot a bunch of deer with the 270 and they worked fine ... [Favorite load =78 gr H 414 270 gr Hornady spitzer in the 375 H&H....... Its easy shooting, not too fast and doesn,t ruin alot of meat.... It meters easy and doesn,t cost an arm and a leg...If you get enough of them your set for shooting and hunting most game for quite a while. I use mostly X bullets when I really need to rely on a bullet.....

You gentlemen certainly haven't disappointed me. Got what I came for, is what I mean. Smiler

If we treat this like statistical analysis and throw out the high review and the low review (lol), it looks like they're worth my time and money, but if the buff is charging, I'd do better to take away his credit card. Smiler

Thanks to all. Thanks for the load recommendations, also. I've got a couple of those powders around here somewhere.....

One does not need premium slug for everything. I have good luck with PMP 300gr SP on deer, hog,..., <$20/pack and they work at typical ranges here (100yrds. or less). They're are not as tough or accurate as RemiSafariGr S-A-F, but we all know how much those cost per pack. Frownerund Smiler
