New Ruger .458 Lott Question Login/Join

As hoped for, my wife came through with a new Ruger .458 Lott for Christmas. I'm glad I chose the Ruger over the CZ, since it seems like it's much closer to being usable right out-of-the-box. It has a very nice stock, pretty good trigger and an action much smoother than I anticipated. I can't tell how it feeds yet, since I don't have any ammo -- factory or hand loaded. I felt like buying loaded ammo or components for the caliber BEFORE I received the gun to be just a little too prententious.

I do have a question, however, about the flip up express sights. There is no notch in the back "vee" (the 50-yard sight). The other two are notched nicely, but not the back, fixed, one. Is this normal? If I remember correctly, this sight was notched on my last RSM (before I removed the barrel and turned it into a .404 Jeffery.

Just wondering how I'm supposed to draw a bead on that charging buffalo when there is no notch!

I have an older RSM in 416 and my sight has a thin line grooved into the back of it (facing the shooter of course) leading up to the "V". I had it gold filled and it draws yor eye to the V quite well. Guess Ruger's cutting corners? Might I recommend Mark Penrod or a gunsmith of your trust to have it tuned. If memoery serves me right, that rifle has an issue feeding the Bridger and other flat nose solids from the left side. jorge

700,

I would agree, however the vee is so shallow that my older eyes can't tell where the bottom is quickly. And if I ever need the irons, "quick" will be the operative word.

I'll be putting 1.5-5 scope on it soon, but I'll still want to get the irons worked out so I can take the glass off when tracking wounded game in the thick jess (something I've had the unfortunate experience of doing more than once).

GAHUNTER,
My 458 LOTT also has a very fine line leading to the V. CHEERS

The manual that came with the rifle (or you can get it online) shows the sight picture for that wide-V sight.

I have found that the wide-V sight is too low for factory Hornady ammo on my rifle at 100 yards... so is the middle sight.
