Are soft points necessary? I just bought a .577Nitro and have started my search for ammo. There are more loadings than I first imagined, in both solid and soft points. Im just wondering if soft points are worth considering, since anything Id likely be using it on would require a solid. Any particular suggestions? My way of thinking is that solids in say woodleighs are harder on your barrels than softs. I like to shoot softs when plinking becasue they are cheaper and I think easier on barrels. But if you are shooting say woodleigh or the CEB solids and not worried about the cost I see no reason why not shoot solids all the time. If I shoot a buff some day with my 577 though I would use softs at least for the first shot. Mac

In 577 (.585) Woodleigh offers a 650 grain "BP" soft that is GREAT fun on canteloupes, watermellons, water jugs, etc. Midway has them on sale every now and then and they are definitely worth it for the fun factor. From what I've read by the experts here and in a variety of books, only elephant require a solid (as far as game goes) and softs for everything else. Good luck and let's see some photos!!! The Woodleigh softs are good bullets and pretty cheap. I shoot quite a few of the 650 gr BPE bullets for practice. I also use cast bullets a lot. When hunting it will be CEB BBW#13 solids and Non Con's only. I may be a little bias. My gun regulated with just about any bullet and a charge of RL-15 anywhere from 107 to 122 grs. I used 28 ga card and fiber wads as filler. Also foam backer rod works good.
