In general I don't think the board at large has disparaged the 45-70 as a hunting round. Many posters have used it for a variety of game, and quite effectively.

I don't mean to doubt or disparage your accomplishments, but have you hunted thick skinned African game? It is only in the context of thick skinned African game that the discussions get interesting.

I haven't hunted Africa, and I'm unwilling to use my experience on the game I've hunted to think I'll make the best decision on what works there. I will look at was has been historically used there, and why to make my decision.

Thanks for the invitation! What's the name of your shop, and when are you there?

BTW, you're awfully defensive. Can you point out where I implied any dishonesty on your part?

George

GeorgeS,
You come out this way, let me know. We can get together and hit the range, you need to try out the .600

"Geezus Christ, give it a fucking rest already!"

I couldn't agree more.

"I spend time at many forums, generally lurking because these pissing contests seem to be so universal on the boards."

And yet you contribute your two cents worth.

"There is always some 'bwana' in the crowd who has managed to kill some beastie in Africa "

Sounds like a perfect description of the ball buster.

"The other nitpickers are the same booger eating shits from grade school who chanted 'prove it' to everything that got said on the playground. "

Grow some shoulders cupcake. Bullshit is just that and the origional poster here spreads it pretty thick. I guess you view BallBuster as the Davey Crocket of the 45-70 clan. IE, "I've shot more cape buffalo than any man here, bow, Lever gun you name it I've done it ! I can knock a 700 # bear out of the Orchard just by cocking my 45-70, I have two gun shops blah blah blah." Are you two sure your not related to Carmelo ?

"Here are grown men yanking the goddamned game record books and doing phone number look ups all in order to bully somebody. What fucking difference does it make....what's the point of your finger pointing?"

I was wondering the very same thing about your post. Especially since looking up the Record Bear supported the Ball Busters claim to some degree.

"Personally, I don't give a tinkers damn "

My sentiments about your view as well. I'm wondering why in all of your temper tantrum why you haven't contributed any thing relative to the strand. We already have more than enough worthless trolls and shit weasels who think their opinion is the only one that matters. If you take such great exception then shut the fuck up and stay out of the conversation !

No that # is not listed. No listing exists for Triple Trophy Sporting goods. In point of fact the two exchanges that use the # BB put up are listed to private individuals. Most likely our been there done that BallBuster was trying to do a little rip off on Triple Play Sporting Goods, although he's not even close on the phone #. Christ, I'm such a Bully !

well SHEEEEEET. I guess we better get back to the topic at hand. I can think of lots of good calibers for Black Bears and the 45-70 certainly qualifies. I wouldn't think you need any more on a average black bear. I nearly took my guide gun to AK but got talked out of it. I wish I would have taken it as the average shot on that hunt was under 60 yards. For our Mi bear I hope to hunt with a 38-55 336 Cowboy in the future.

Interesting bedevilment of a man, going on here. Reminds me of a flock of chickens, once one starts to peck the whole goddamned bunch joins in. You guys get your rocks off torturing somebody? Geezus Christ, give it a fucking rest already!

I spend time at many forums, generally lurking because these pissing contests seem to be so universal on the boards.

There is always some 'bwana' in the crowd who has managed to kill some beastie in Africa, has a penchant for giant bore cannons because his weenie is 3" long and sits back on his haunches and declares anything less than a 40MM is a pop gun. The other nitpickers are the same booger eating shits from grade school who chanted 'prove it' to everything that got said on the playground. Here are grown men yanking the goddamned game record books and doing phone number look ups all in order to bully somebody. What fucking difference does it make....what's the point of your finger pointing?

Personally, I don't give a tinkers damn if there are 3,000 pound Kodiaks in Pennsylvania or armor plated stegasaurs in Botswana and you guys use an AMRAM for your personal critter killer. But I do get tired of seeing somebody hounded because he states a certain poundage for a bear and repeatedly chided because the 45-70 isn't the gun a 458 is. Well BFD! Lay off and go take a smoke break and yank your panties out of your ass.

BALLBUSTER,

My last post was actually in your defense, as I was MOCKING GeorgeS. George has a thing about having to see pictures before he believes anyone, and I won't post any! Even though he denies it now, I thought his post to you stunk of accusations that you were/are TROLLING.

The rest of my post was fact, if you like it or not. A 500 Jeffery class cartridge will outperform a 458 Winnie or a 45-70. Although I don't know if a 458 Winnie shooting 45-70 bullets would outperform a 45-70. Actually, I'd bet that you would be hard pressed to tell the difference between the 458 Winnie and a 45-70, both shooting 405 SP bullets on a black bear. Anyway, you will PLEASE NOTICE that NOWHERE did I say that a 45-70 would not work VERY well on a black bear. Not my personaly choice though, not that that means one ioda.

Do you reload for your 45-70? If you do what is your load for those 405 gr pills, and which 405 grain pills are you using?

Chuckwagon,
I am drinking Black Jack in the picture. Although Wild Turkey is good rot gut too.

Canuck,

They will type their fingers off when I am trolling or being an arsehole, but if a serious question is asked, SILENCE. Check the double rifle thread I started. Pathetic, truly pathetic.

Truth is I have no pictures of dead animals I have shot, cause I ain't shot none. Remember, as so many have stated here in the past, I am a member of PETA. I suppose I could post some pictures of dead Wild Turkey bottles, would that count (it is that time of year).

Everyone seems a little more testy than usual...the trolling and squabbling has definitely taken its toll on everyones patience.

I know two things for sure:

1. 600 to 800 pound black bears do exist. I have never seen a picture of one, but sure as heck would like to. Who better to ask for a picture than someone who has killed two! If BB would be so kind, it would be appreciated. Same goes for anyone else that might have a pic they would share.

2. I think I'd still have a penchant for giant bore rifles even if my weenie was longer than 3". Well, I guess I can't know that for sure.

Cheers,
Canuck

Jumptrap,

You either have a reading comprehension problem, are deeply suspicious of others, or have an agenda of your own.

BB stated
Quote:

I've killed bears in Pa over 600 # (2 of them)using a Marlin 1895 and I can not imagine any caliber that would do a better job of it.

Andr and I each suggested two cartridges that might do a 'better job of it'. They were replies, not rebukes.

Before the internet took over as the primary arena for pointless debates, were there not campfire arguments over whether the .30-06 or .270 (or .30-06 vs. .308, or .30-30 vs. .35 Rem., etc.) was 'better'? Is that not part of what these forums are for?

BTW, asking for photos of outsized trophies is not necessarily a challenge for proof, although it is always taken as such by liars. Would you not like to see photos of 600lb. black bears?

George
P.S. Those of us who hunt Africa, and shoot 'cannons' enjoy doing so, and in my case as least, it has nothing to do with compensating for some shortcoming. Of course, those who don't hunt Africa and/or don't shoot cannons have good reason to envy those of us hairy-chested, he-man types who do.

I' surprised he didn't just use his "Marlin LightSabre"!

Well to be exact yes I have hunted an killed four cape buff that qualifies to me as "thick skinned" two with my 458 win mag, 1 with a 45-70 the other with a 45-110.

Thanks GeorgeS I don't think I've laughed this hard in a long time!

For god sakes will someone just show a picture of a bear and end the whole prove it thing.

Here is one shot with a 416 Taylor will it do?

I was hoping to hear some good 45-70 stories from this thread, everyone already knows that anything with a name over .458 is bigger. Can we get back to enjoying rifles please?

Record books and the like get brought out when some one starts trolling. IE "the 45-70 is the best thing to take a 800# bear". Even though the poster has likely never seen, and certainly never shot a 800# bear, let alone with the 45-70. The loaded question is then posed "what caliber could be better ?" giving tight drawred weenies like yourself a chance to hop around and yell some nonsense, or as you so elequently put it..... bully another poster, something you do a pretty fair job of yourself ! If any one here shot the # 1 B&C Black Bear with a 45-70, 458 or 22 LR they would indeed have plenty of photos. I'm certain you would look at them as well irrespective of the size of your Johnson. Now if you could get your anatomy to grow as big as the origional posters nose ( and stories ) the two of you could live happily ever after ! Perhaps he could simply amuse us with the stories of the countless cape buffalo that he has taken with the mighty 45-70 ......Less photos of course ! The fact that nearly all of us would have photos of even a very typical 3-400# Bear is indicative of the fact that anyone hunting with any caliber would certainly have photos of a nearly 700# blackie. Thats a true trophy bear no matter what planet your from.

Why would anyone not consider a .45 caliber bullet going near 2000fps a big bore?

How about one that shoots a .458 Barnes X bullet at near 2,300 fps.? My M70 .450 Marlin does it better. Lawdog
