Looks like we're on a .375H&H roll at the moment so I thought I'd join in.

Been to Africa a time or two and somehow just can't imagine a trip there without a .375H&H; either the stubby Winchester Model 70 or the Blaser R93.

Had both at the range last night but the primary reason was to see which load was gonna be used. Since there'll be Springbok culling involved the Blaser R93 .243 Winchester barrel with 85 Nosler Partitions gets the nod and it printed it's standard 5-shot one ragged hole 2" high at 100 meters - that's sorted. The .375H&H barrel is going along for the Warthogs, Wildebeast & a new Zebra rug; so a Blaser combo barreled set was pretty much already pre-destined for this hunt.

The 260 gr. Accubonds didn't cut muster, superbly accurate as usual in the Winchester but the Blaser didn't digest them as well as I'd hoped; actually not even close - no cigar. Didn't seem to make much difference with me since I've had less than sterling penetration success with 250 & 260 grainers in this cartridge, both the Federal factory 250 gr. TBBC's or the handloaded 260 gr. Accubonds just barely managing to reach the opposite lung on broadside shots on Wildebeast, Oryx, Kudu & Zebra when used on several trips to RSA. Guess where I'm going with this? Yeah, O.K. I prefer heavier bullets in this cartridge.

Since the Blaser R93 .375H&H standard contour (Magna-Ported) barrel set-up (w/1.5-4.5x26 scope) weighs in at 7.7 lbs. ready-to-go it's sorta my idea of a real featherweight for this cartidge - don't notice the lack of heft in the field (where it counts) but from a bench you have to pay attention to what you're about, she sorta jumps around on the bags if you don't use good technique and I don't want to have to relate another "Got Kissed" story, we just had a good thread on this topic.

To cut to the Chase; the standard vanilla-flavored, time tested & true load with 300 gr. Hornady RN, 79.5 grs. of VVN-160, WLRM, PMP brass at 3.56" (Lee FCD to the upper edge of the cannleure) cut 3 three shot clover leaves 2" high at 100 meters. That's sorted too.

Glad I don't have the stress of having to work up loads on top of all that anticipation, too.

Big Grin

Like you I couldn't imagine going hunting in Africa without taking the 375 H&H.

For plains game I always have to trade off the .375 H&H against the 9,3x62 which is a bit handier. Have to make a decision in the next week. Is never easy as they both shoot well.

Frank,

Mike,

I've never taken my 9.3x62 to Africa but my buddy, Ingo does - every time he goes. Although a very stubby Tracker barrel for his battle-scared Blaser R93 it works real good and he's deadly with it, too! Shoot, Bang-Flop, Shoot, Bang-Flop - outstanding!

Sorta the "So many rifles, too little time....." issue.

BAH! I don't believe for a moment you have a Blaser at all.

We need some pics for Proof! Big Grin

I've never had the chance to shoot my .375 at game (yet). Heck, I shot a backstop without sights and now I'm just plain jonesing big time to get it back from the Smith.

Truly, best of luck in Africa - and enjoy that .375!

Regards,

Robert

Hey r,

I haven't done any photos on AR before but your reponse finally convinced me that I refuse to be "photo challenged" anymore.

Ugh, O.K.....here's the Blaser "Football" with the 375H&H & 243 Winchester barrels, OffRoad stock, two scopes, extra bolt head & Assembly Tools (in the little black ex-Barnes bullet box that's been padded with foam).....ready to Rock & Roll in Namibia.

Here's the .375H&H with all it's various Bits & Pieces assembled.

A photo of "Stubby" (a Buddy's nickname for my Winchester Model 70).

I hope your new Boomer ends up looking as you imagine it.....perhaps we share some common ground with good taste in rifles? Barrel band swivel & front sight aren't too clear but had 4" circumsized off that longish 24" tube - she handles much-o better-o now.

Trust me - we will have a good time in Namibia. We'll post some photos when we return.

Hi Gerry,

I just re-assembled my scope mount and scope to my Winchester 70 in .375H&H...

Nice gun and mine likes also the 300grs Hornady RN bullets, but the 260 grs Accubond not...

I can´t go to Africa, but I hope to get some pigs in the next few month with mine... :-)

Servus Klaus!

So which Swarovski scope did you install on your Winnie Model 70?

Big Grin

I've used both the Blaser & the Winchester on Drive Hunts for Boar. The 300 gr. Hornady RN's drop 'em PDQ, too and without a lot of bloodshot meat either.

Most that don't kow me personally when I get a second-hand invite look pretty doubious at my Artillery Piece when I arrive - but at the "Strecke" they are "True Believers"

Wink

I wish you much "Waidmannsheil" on your Piggie forary's.

I'm in an Extra-Good mood today as my son, who is stationed in Grafenwohr; graduated from the German Hunting Course this morning (96% passing score, not too shabby) & now has his German Jagdshein!

Hi Gerry,

tell him my congratulations...!!!

Well, I have my Swarovski PV-N 3-12x50 on it, working superb. Of course with SR rail and mounted on my Titanium Scope Mount , black plasma coated... Looks awesome!!!

I have shot a few pigs with that combo and also 1 roedeer and 1 fox - all nearly no meat damage, just a big hole... Big Grin

Yes, if I arrive somewhere with this gun, everyone is afraid of it´s size. And even the guys from the "only a 9,3 is good on pigs" shut up very fast then... :-)

My combo makes 20mm shot groups (5 shot within max 5 minutes) - so I am very pleased with it.
