When working up loads for a big bore, in both softs and solids, what would be the ideal in terms of velocity versus point of impact? I assume that if you load both types of bullets to the same velocity at the muzzle they won't be near each other in terms of point of impact at any useful distance for zeroing your scope, because of bullet shape and ballistic coefficient. So do the savvy among you load for different velocities and same POI at some optimal distance? Or load for the same V0 and and just zero the scope for one of the two? I should specify that my rifle is a bolt action 404 Jeffery.

Every gun is different, they are individuals in this dept...

I have loaded my 404s as follows and they all shot to same POI...93 grs. of IMR-4831 for softs and 92 for solids..or 93 with Northfork cup points and let it go at that. They are all in the 2400 FPS bracket.

So, did you locate a supply of NF bullets? If not, what bullets did you settle for?

475Guy,

Mike at NorthFork found a few Flat Point Solids in .423 in his stock and I'll get a couple of boxes of those. I've still got a box and half of the Cup Point Solids and have gotten 2,350 fps with no apparent problems with 77.5 grains of Tubal 5000 powder.

But as for the 423-380 SS bullets, somebody bought the whole remaining stock at NorthFork!

Oh well, the FPS and CPS bullets ought to work on just about anything. I've also got a box of 400 grain Swift A-Frames and a box of Barnes 400 grain Banded Solids. Now all I need to do is get back to Africa.

You're on the right track, but with the CP's, you just may not need solids anymore. But, I'd have a few around just in case.
