It is moving the cartridge 450 Rigby at 458 Lott cartridge among professional hunters in Africa?. I am owner of a 458 Lott and I think not much talk lately of this cartridge, the cartridge is being forgotten and I do not know if it is still used by hunters to bring down PROFESSION elephants and other dangerous game. It is a reflection and ask me to do and make for you.

Regards and thanks,

Ovny.

I don't know what the majority of professional hunters use as their "big bore" rifle. I do know the 375 H&H Magnum is very popular though in Africa it's considered a "medium bore." The 458 Winchester Magnum would also be considered high on the list of of popular cartridges even though it's inferior to the 458 Lott. The advantage the 458 Winchester Magnum has is that it came out first so ammunition availability is better than for the 458 Lott.

So, I don't think the 458 Lott is forgotten or will be any time soon.

Thank you sir, at the beginning of this forum I could read lots of threads on the cartridge 458 Lott. Then Lott cartridge was the best, the paradise of cartridges for great wildlife, but then gradually people were criticizing the cartridge, as it was no longer as effective as it at first seemed. So I wonder if it has been displaced by cartridges like the 450 Rigby, a cartridge with a large brass, which does the same job that Lott but with less pressure chamber. Also many forum members have been falling for cartridges like the 470 Capstick, or 500 A-Square etc ... forgetting Jack Lott cartridge. Anyway, thank you very much friend.

You have to remember that accuratereloading.com is frequented by a special group of rifle enthusiasts who like what is newer or more powerful or different. That's why you'll read more about more unusual cartridges here but that doesn't mean the 458 Lott isn't still very good.

Ovny-

Your .458Lott is as good now as it was when you first bought it. No worries about what it can and will do on DG, including Elephant. It is still preferred over the .458wm, which is why Jack Lott developed it in the first place.

In his 2007 PH Survey of 107 respondents, CB got the following results on caliber for thick skinned game (top 4 only shown):

470NE........20
.416.........16
.458Lott.....14
.458wm.......10

A lot of PHs have had their 458 Win. chambered out to the 458 Lott and recently it appears many are apparantly going to the 458-3" that is getting popular in Africa. That's quite a cartridge..

The 458 Lott has been commercialized in the USA as Weatherby is now producing rifles in that caliber..

So I suspect the 458 Lott is here to stay, will it ever achieve big numbers like the .375 or 30-06, I seriously doubt it as it is, afterall, a specialized round...

Thanks mates, I thought I would change professional hunters cartridges like the 458 Winchester or 458 Lott by bulls as the 500 Jeffery and 505 Gibbs. But for your answers I see that the 458 Lott still can give much tin animals like elephants, cape buffalo and other large animals. You'll see that when I win the lottery, I will visit Africa to take a big trophy and my 458 Lott thunder jejeej in the African savannah.

I suspect those rankings have changed in the last 6 years, with the Lott higher on the list, the 470 lower and perhaps a few 450 Rigbys.

Agreed, and I would expect the 500NE to have moved from a tie for 5th place into the top 4. All indications, including on AR, indicate the 500NE has surged in the DR category, particularly with Elephant hunters.

So I understand that since the completion of the list, the 458 Lott has improved it. I like that.

With the new bullets out there the 458 Win does everything it was meant to . The Lott just does it a little better.

If I was going bigger than 458 Win, then 500 Jeffery in Bolt and 500 Nitro or 450 NE in doubles are the most popular here in SA.

I wish my salary and the laws of my country would allow me to have a 500 Jeffery caliber rifle, it is my dream.

The wided bodied rounds will never be as popular as the .458 Win and .458 Lott because the cost of the rifles is much higher for the fatsos.

It is a powerful reason. Wink
