What is the consensus here about the "new" M98 Magnum Mausers. I am interested in one chambered in .450 Dakota. Thanks for any input. gduffey

The Vektor, Granite Mountain & Prechtl are as good as they get, should be for what they cost.

gduffey,
I got one of the SigArms Mauser 98 Magnums from Cabelas in Sidney, Nebraska, in 450 Dakota.

It has a Prechtl action just like the Johannsen, but not as closely fitted: the epoxy bedding may show here and there in tiny places along the barrel channel and action, but otherwise well done.

It weighs 9.5 pounds bare, and has a light and whippy 25" barrel and is a little butt heavy. 14.75" LOP with Decelerator pad. O.K. wood, rather plain walnut, with rosewood forend tip, and a subdued satin finish. Glossy blue metal. No recoil lug on the barrel, but two sound crossbolts.

The dropbox holds 4 rounds down plus one in the chamber = five-shooter. Feeding and function are fine, well polished internally.

Mauser flag safety and one fixed rear express V sight and a gold bead front. Barrel banded front sight and sling base.

Double square bridge with no scope mounting allowances.

For a whole lot less money than a Johannsen, it was irresistable.

I am curious about the rifles previously imported by SIG and now I think imported under the Mauser name only. Seems to be a good value in comparison with the other magnum actioned rifles I've seen. Let me hear from others. thanks

RIP, thanks for your feedback. That is what I am looking at. The stock is too long for me..thats easy. I would like to smooth out or blend the peaks in the sides of the stock right at the area at the rear of the receiver. How does it shoot? What are you shooting in it? tell me more. thanks, gduffey

Now that picture gets my attention. Does the Rigby bolt peep present at problems on the .450 class rifles? gduffey

gduffey,
The factory target shows a 3-shot 50 meter target with the express sights (is it a man or a machine rest with iron sights?), using Woodleigh 500 grainers (soft/solid not specified):

Group is < 0.6" center-to-center for three shots, and ...
POI is 0.5" above point of aim at 50 meters, and ...
windage is right on

I've got a bunch of North Fork bullets to try in this: 450 grain SP, FP, CP. Should be interesting to see how the sights work with those. Hope I don't have to change anything.

Too many irons in the fire.

I've heard the Hartmann & Weiss actions are some primo actions, likely with a primo price too!

I have wanted a .500 Jefferey for some time. After talking with Geoff Broom at the Dallas Convention I have decided to go with the .450 Dakota in a Mauser. I may have one or two Elephant opportunities at the most and this should be perfect. I will get to the bullets later. This just seems to be the most cost effective option balancing good quality and price. I would like to do some penetration test on my own trying all the Woodleighs from 500gr. to the 600gr. geduffey

Forrest,
Thanks for the link. He may out-Johannsen Reimer.
Same action in the SigArms, but Prechtl's are gussied up a bit. The Mauser banner SigArms basic M98 Magnum has a black decelerator pad and rosewood forend tip, unmilled square bridges, and the Mauser flag safety. I'll bet Prechtl would build one like the Sig for a discount under his usual prices???

African Hunter,
Approaching 6K is Cabelas list. Haggle off $500 if there are any showroom scratches or shipping scratches or dings.

He will build a "cheaper" rifle on request. It all depends on what the customer wants. And he sometimes has some demonstration rifles and used rifles too.

I would contact them directly and import it myself with an ATF Form 6 and avoid middlemen.
