CZ .416 Rigby - which Leupold scope ?

Charlie64CZ .416 Rigby - which Leupold scope ?
.
Have used the rifle to date with iron sights, which has and works well.
Thinking of putting on a scope now and whilst I have Swaros, Zeiss, S&B and other European glass on other rifles, I am thinking of trying a Leupold.
Question is which one? Think Africa plains and DG.
Am sure there is a lot more experience and advice here on AR than me trawling the Leupold website and other sites.
Thoughts and advice greatly welcomed!
Thanks
Charlie

LabmanIf a VX 6 isn't in the budget or if illumination isn't needed a vx3HD 1.5x5x20 will fit your needs.

chuck375I like the Leupold 1.5x5x20 a lot I have 3 of them. Nice glass, hold up to recoil (400 plus rounds through my 500 Jeffery), plenty of eye relief.

Chuck

MARK H. YOUNGCharlie,
The 2.5x8 Leupold is hard to beat for an all round scope.

NormanConquestI agree. I have that scope on several of my rifles. I even have one leftover if you're interested.

Heym SR20I would go with a small leupold 1-4x20 in a 1” tube. The European 1-6x20 and on 30mm tubes and have quite bulky eyepiece bells. All of which means added weight, bulk and higher mounting. The Leupold’s are typically half the weight of the Euro glass.

Charlie64.
Mark, NC, Karl - usually my internet search skills are pretty good but I cannot pull up anything on Leupold 2,5x8 or 2.5x8 ?? What am I missing? Or are we looking at the 2,5 - 8x36 ?

surefire7Try 2.5-8 for an American website (not 2,5-8).
Commas & Periods!
Or, 2.5-8x36

416RigbyHunterYep, 2.5-8 gets my vote. I also have 2-7x32 as my lowest power scopes. Used a 1.5-5 and didn’t like it at all.
Cheers.

dougfinnI also like the Leopold 1.5x5x20. Have mine on my Winchester safari in .375 H&H. Like the others have said, clear optics and lots of eye relief. Looks good on the rifle too.

MARK H. YOUNGCharlie,
The Leupold website lists the original 2.5x8x36 as discontinued. What they are offering is the same scope with the CDS option which is probably not necessary or desired on a 416. It's called the 2.5x8x36 CDS-ZL. MRSP is cataloged at $499. Personally I'd try to find a 2nd hand or NIB one on the Internet from a private citizen. I'm sure there are a number of these floating about.
Good luck

NormanConquestYeah, I have a 2.5 X 8 that I would sell for $300.00. If you're interested, P.M. me.

eagle27Sorry guys but it would avoid confusion if everyone referred to scopes by their correct designation as given by the manufacturer. Charlie64 is confused as are others probably where scopes are referred to as 1.5x5x20. It should be 1.5-5x20 i.e. variable power from 1.5 to 5 magnification with a 20mm objective lens.
A 2.5x8 is meaningless. Check out the Leupold site for correct terminology on the sizing of their scopes.

AtkinsonI would use a 3X Leupold fixed, even a 4X would suit me..In a varible Id sugest a 1.5x5 or a 1x4 Leupold, and never over a 2x7..
I really prefer a fixed power low end power scope on a DG rifle..
I find the 416s and 375s good to 400 yards under good situations...and don't feel the need to shoot further than that, and 99% of my African shots have been under 300 yards and most under 200 yards...

Mr.RigpigMy CZ550 in 416 came with a vari-x 111 1.75-6x32 in QD rings, I see no reason to change it.

Ken WI’ve had the CZ 550 in 416 Rigby (European stock) since 2000. It has a Leupold VX-II 1-4x20mm and I love it.
14 October 2021, 16:22
BEGNOMy Kevlar stocked CZ 416 Rigby had a 1.5x5x20 heavy duplex VX III Leupold and I liked it, but I have recently switched to the VX 6 1x6 with illuminated reticle and I like it better.
Having said that, I agree with several others that the 2.5x8 Leupold is a very good choice too.
