Recoil Question Login/Join

I have a 9.75 Lbd 450 NE and with full loads have no problem at all with recoil. I have never fired a 458 Lott. How much recoil ( in comparison ) to the 450 NE would a 458 Lott have if firing 500 grain at 2200 fps in a bolt gun weighing 9.75 lbs. I know recoil felt recoil is subjective but I am looking for experienced opinions. Keep in mind I am not recoil shy and find that the 450 NE recoil is less felt by me than my 870 12 ga. with heavy turkey loads.

I don't know about the recoil of the 450 as I have never shot one. I do know about the recoil of the 458 Lott. It is about my personal limit off the bench, if not my max limit. Off the sticks, it isn't that bad maybe a little more than the .470 NE but not that much more.

My .450 Rigby weighs in at 10.25 and I won't shoot it off the bench without a sandbag in front of my shoulder. I load the bullet just about 100 fps faster than your Lott. Off the sticks I can do a five shot string without any problem. Does this help any?

The 20 extra grains of bullet weight, and 1-200 fps of additional velocity, will make a Lott of equal weight kick about 15-20% more than a .450 NE.

All else being equal, of course. (And it never is!)

I don't think the extra hundred or so feet per second from the Lott will make any noticeable difference to you. I have a Ruger #1 in 458 Lott and can shoot max loads out of it all day off the bench with no problems. 35 rounds in one day is the most I have done. Now the 460 Weatherby is a whole different story. Two or three rounds and you're done.

I do not consider a Lott to have any recoil. Like a maidens kiss.-Rob

I'm excited to see my .458 Lott when it shows up. I already have things turning to make another #1 into a .460 Weatherby

56hawk,
My best (or worst) day with the Lott was 40 rounds off the bench in one sitting. The scope cut me 7 times because I was leaned over the rifle. 50 rounds out of my .470 doesn't have that effect on me. The Lott is a 9.5 lb rifle, the load chrono'd a 500 gr a 2260. I personally think I have reached my limit off the bench. Now off the sticks, the Lott is a pussycat. But I am standing up and my whole body is recoiling with it. I'd much rather shoot an 11.5 lb double in .470 off the bench than the Lott. Unfortunately for me, I have to work up another load with a better bullet for next year than the Hornady DGX so I get to go through this mess again ( with Gusto)

Rob,
When your retinas become detached from the calibers that you have to get an exemption from the ATF to shoot, maybe you'll come to your senses!(LOL just giggin' ya) Better, tougher man than I! and MAIDEN'S KISS, MY ASS!

pagosawingnut, Rob is absolutely correct on this one.

If a man is new to it, and has never fired one off before, the first time with the Lott will get that man's attention.

But it won't keep it!

Generally just like his first maiden's kiss. Big Grin

Oh, I've got over 500 rounds through my Lott. I just think that it is my personal limit. I can sit and shoot 185 rounds out of my .375(un-braked) then shoot 100 rounds out of my .416 Rem and none of it bothers me. I can shoot the .458 win for 50 rounds off the bench and still be smiling. I can go about 40 rounds out of my .470 NE without a thought but, the Lott is just vicious to me.

Compared to some of the calibers these guys play with, I'm a sissy.
