400 Whelen, a 10.75x68 in process and debating a 404J, another 400 W or maybe a 411 KDF.

If you think every possible niche has been filled already, thank a wildcatter!

1) 404 Jeffery
2) 416 Rigby
3) 416 Ruger
4) 450/400

My favorite by far is...my 404 Jeffery

It is a Dakota Safari that weighs 8.5 lbs. dancing

I own,

500/416,DR
416 Rem,bolt
450/400,DR
416/348,lever

So far I have taken,Buff & pigs with the 500/416,was very impressed, dropped the buff where it stood, one black bear with the 450/400 also DRT,am waiting for a chance to hunt the lever, the Rem mag is a safe queen for now,my favorite do it all would be the 500/416,if I had to just keep one, load it up or down & hunt anything, but this round is not very popular & it's not even on the list, even though it duplicates the 416 Rig or the 416 Rem in a DR, Roll Eyes,in my old age I think I would go with the majority & start swearing by my easy to shoot 450-400 Smiler

I see this thread had devolved into "what 40 calibers do I own".
So;
405 WCF
450-400 two
40-65 two
404-400
38-40 (Yes it is a true 40 caliber; not a 38; it was mis-named by Winchester marketing in 1884)
38-40 revolvers two
Probably more I have forgot about.

As some have suggested, the question of which calibre is most popular really assumes us all to be polsters or have knowledge of sales.

I simply voted for the .450/.400 because that's what I've got - and I got that calibre just because that's what the Heym factory had ready in stock when I inquired. I understand it was the most popular cartridge in late colonial times in India - but that was there and then, this is here (around the AR world) and now.

I would think the 416 Rem would be the most popular / actually purchased. I have the 416 Rem and 416 Ruger. I like them both. But, most days I like the 416 Ruger the mostest for my purposes.

I was sad to notice that since this thread started, both Dave Bush and Alberta Canuck have passed on. They were great friends...rest their souls.

Well, I'm not really sure what I said that brought that comment out of the woodwork Ray? My last post on this thread was just shy of 8 years ago on Aug. 15, 2011. I don't think I said anything cross toward you on this thread.

But since you brought it up, it ain't just me Pal. You've told enough "Tall Tales" on this forum that I don't need to continue pointing them out. You still have some snookered. Most of us have you figured out by now.

Wink

And just to put a fine point on your inaccuracies, NO, this thread didn't start in 2000. It started on Aug, 6, 2011. No worries though, you're only wrong by 11 years.

So many friends lost recently. I had many discussions with Dave. He called me on the phone once and we spoke for over an hour. We disagreed on a lot but he was always a nice gentleman. I didn't know AC but remember when he passed. He seemed to be well liked.

I didn’t answer this one back in the day because I hadn’t shot much.

As far as used, which I take to mean actually hunted game with- the .416 Rigby is by far in the lead for me. I’ve killed game with that, and the .416 Remington mag.

I’ve shot a fair number on your list, but only own 2 .416 Rigbys, a .416 Remington, a .44 mag, and a .44-40 for rifles in that range. I guess I don’t think the handguns count- most of them are toys for me, and I have a heck of a lot more of those than rifles- not quite sure why. I think it has to do with when I was younger and had less money, collecting meant quantity, and I was not a big game hunter. Now I spend it on hunts instead.
