Hey men, Do you #1 tropical owners feel that the Ruger rings supplied with the rifles are adequate? I'm partial to Talley rings on my other rifles, and I've seen what can happen to a guy with crappy rings out in the field. I'm not saying that the Ruger rings are bad; I just don't have any experience with them. Anyway, I'm putting a 2x-8x Leupold scope on a 375H&H #1 and am wondering if I should just put detachables on it now. BTW, does company make detachable rings for the #1? Thanks for any advice/opinions, -eric " . . . a gun is better worn and with bloom off---So is a saddle---People too by God." -EH

TH, amigo; I've owned my #1H in .416 Rigby for over 11 years now. In that time, wearing the Ruger rings and a variety of scopes, it has fired well over 3000 rounds. The large majority of that ammunition was cast-bullet stuff, and much of that was loaded down around the 360-grain/2000 fps area. However, there was also a good bit of hotter-than-factory loads, too. Some of these were pushing 3000 fps with the 300 Barnes X, or 2600 with 400-grain Barnes X-bullets. The recoil was "substantial", shall we say. The Ruger rings served me perfectly, and I like them a lot. If you can mount your scope where you want it using the factory rings, you should have no worries at all. I believe they now have an extended-type ring available, for those more-difficult mounting situations. Nice rifles, aren't they? Regards from BruceB (aka Bren Mk1)

Adequate for what? Ruger rings will hold up longer than ANY scope! I have Ruger rings on a No. 1 .375 H&H and also on a #7.5 No. 1 in .45/70 that has much more recoil than a .375 H&H with the loads I use in it. I went thru several brands of scopes on that .45/70 before I found one that would stand up to the beating. It took a Leupold, naturally! 2.5X-8X, as a matter of fact............ Yes, extension rings are available for the No. 1. But I don't know about QD rings. Not from Ruger, anyway. "Bitte, trinks du nicht das Wasser. Dahin haben die Kuhen gesheissen."

Thanks Bren and El-D, I guess I won't worry about it then. If the rings can take a 416 Rigby, then they are okay with me. Just the sort of advice I was looking for. They are nice rifles, very nice indeed. Sort of the "anti-AR/M4" to me. I'm sick of seeing those ugly, unreliable hunks of plastic. That is a story for a different day, though Thanks Pards! -eric " . . . a gun is better worn and with bloom off---So is a saddle---People too by God." -EH

The factory rings work fine. If you want detachables, Warne makes them for the #1. Great rifles, classic hunting rig. LIFE IS NOT A SPECTATOR'S SPORT!

Check with Brownells. I believe they offer levers for Ruger rings which are similar in function to the Talley/Warne style.

No problem w. the Ruger rings -- I tried to order some Conetrols though, and that was pretty much a SNAFU all the way around -- I did eventually get some that fit my 45-70 #1 from them, though... Ruger rings are great, but if you want detachables, go for Warnes. They have several grades, use the best. I think they are called maxima.I have warne detachables on 3 rifles, a 375, a 404, and a 416. I have a single 1.5x5 X leupold for all 3 rifles to act as a spare. Have used these rings for 10 years, >200 rounds, with complete satisfaction. I think these rings are better than the detachable Leupolds, as I had some difficulty with return to zero with my 300 wby.

I use the factory Ruger rings on both my No 1's and M77's. I do however trade Ruger out for the offset rings for the No.1. I found out recently that Talley does not make rings for the No.1 or M77 but Warne does.
