New barrel to be made

PositronNew barrel to be made
I spoke with Casey at Pac Nor and he told me I could have a barrel made for my second choice the 585 Nyati. My question will there have to be a significant amount of work done on the action of my Ruger No. 1 to make it work. And what could I do to the stock to make it shootable. Hydraulic recoil reducers, mercury recoil reducers, etc........What would help

CanuckI dunno jack about the Ruger#1, other than having shot one on 458WM a few times, so I can't help you there.
Curious though...since you have to settle from your original choice of a 577 T-rex, have you given any thought to the 550 Magnum? Seems to me it would be quite a bit easier to re-barrel to, and would probably give you what you are looking for in terms of recoil. 700gr bullet at 2375fps for 8750ft-lbs. See

Paul HHaven't done it personally but I believe in addtion to headspacing the barrel, the safety will have to be reset into the action so the round can be loaded, the extractor will have to be modified, and perhaps the action slightly scalloped to feed the round.
Personally I consider falling block actions best with rimmed rounds, and since the 585 Nyati is basically a rimless 577 NE, I'd highly recomend going with a 577NE. It will have much greater resale appeal, and do everything you need in that bore size.
There have been discussions about whether the #1 action is strong enough for full power 577 NE loads, and no consensus. Personally I think the 500 NE is the largest prudent round to chamber in the #1.
You could build a 550 mag repeater on a CZ 550 for not much more money than a big bore #1 consisdering the additional work required for the #1 to feed the large rounds.

PositronF#$k that I am just going to cancel the order and say the hell with it. I agree with you gentlemen its just not worth it. I can see it now my gun will probably look like hammered s#$t if I went ahead it did all of that to it. Maybe Ill just buy a muzzleloader in big bore. Its gotta be a cheaper way to go......

Paul HIf you're complaining about gunsmithing costs, I imagine you didn't look into brass, dies and component bullets

The 460 Wetherby is a very powerful round, and resonably inexpsenive on a number 1. I can't imagine full patch 600 gr loads don't generate the effect you are after.
The next step up is the 460 Necked to 50 cal in various incantations, and throated to take 50 bmg milsurp rounds. Same resonably priced brass, component bullets aren't too bad, and it's powerful.
Once you go past 50 cal, prices jump in a hurry, and availability drops as well.
Just like fast cars, you gotta pay to play.

ManCannonPositron, in all seriousness, what's your angle on this gun you're trying to get off the ground. You've been all over the map on wants, desires, projects, ideas, etc... Fart in a whirlwind comes to mind. Do you just like a good shoulder pounding? Are you looking to have the biggest #1 you can have? Are you trying to impress someone with your big bore prowess? Seriously... What's your angle? What's the driving force behind this seemingly unending search/drive for a heavy recoiling gun? It might make sense if you were into old British cartridges, or new high pressure "techno" rounds, or maybe even single shots, or muzzleloaders to boot... But you've been across about every imaginable area of interest in search of some end result.

ManCannonDo you hunt? Do you just target shoot? How many times a week? Also, what are your reloading capabilities?

tiggertateHaving had all the prerequisite warnings, I say go for it. You'll never know 'till you try and if you don't care for it, someone on AR will still buy it. It's just the way we are.

PositronBent Fossdal,
Is it my imagination or does your Ruger No. 1 in 577 Nitro Express have no sights on it. How do you shoot that thing man and be accurate?

Bent FossdalMagic, pure magic..................
Hehe, as you can see, the barrel is also in the white, and the stockwork is not complete. This was the firs trip to the range, as soon as it was possible to shoot. No hitting, just feeling!
I am not the smith, it was done by a norwegian colleague of mine, also a graduate from Colorado Scool of Trades.

Idaho SharpshooterPositron,
I have a Ruger #2 (#3 with a real adult-sized barrel and wood on it) in 45-120. It is a thumper, and there is enough action thickness to do a 50-140 Sharps. In a #1 you could load 750gr GC cast bullets over 2100fps safely. That ought to put you down for an eight count.
just an earrant thought...
