Finished and ready to ship to it's new owner, thought you all might like to see it though
The technical details:
8 Bore (.835") 1:104 twist Octagon to wedding band transition then straight tapered round to the muzzle.
Jeff Tanner Ball Mould (.805")
The finished rifle weighs right at 11 pounds.
The Action is a Pete Allan Boxlock Casting, it is representative of the 1860's Edwin Wesson Boxlocks. The metal finish is rust blued.
The Ramrod is Rosewood w/ a steel button on one end and a threaded steel tip on the other for accesories.
It has a full length underrib to add a little weight.
The Stock is rock maple, stained with a dark walnut stain and then oil finished and then waxed to a sheen. The forearms has an ebony tip, all the pipes, underrib, front sight and sight base were custom made in my shop. The action was also reshaped, and the original triggerguard was removed and replace with the more elegant and classic one in the finished pictures. The butt plate is a wide English style plate.
The checkering is flattop.

The load data is on the sight in target, it is a light load and is still shooting a bit low, I left it at that so he will be able to develop his load with his components and bring it up to a full 8 bore charge.

If you would like to read up on the build process or see the build pictures they can be found at my website in the current projects section: Stolzer & Son's Gunsmithing

If you have any question feel free to ask.

Enjoy

Colin

a rod is 16.5 feet. You are thinking a 10 rod zero.

I've been known to be wrong before and it's liable to happen again, thanks for the correction, I will go verify it and correct it as needed.

Wonderful, I will go check out the website next. What an outstanding choice for a bore size, and a gun proportioned that a person can manage.

I wonder about something, back in the day of muzzle loaders did anyone every use a rubber recoil pad. I see some that look way out of place. but there was a time when BP ctg were introduced and muzzle loaders still in use and seems some of the ctg guns had pads. The love that gun, and just asking if a person wanted something like that, is there something in the historic record to justify a big rubber pad?

Thank You.
I've seen originals that had leather pads on them, similar to the modern silvers pads, but I don't know if they were original to the rifle or added on later. I might have to do a little research in my spare time and find out. As to rifles I've built, I occasionally put pads on some, but I build to my customers requests so if they want a pad they get a pad.

Thank you.

I cast them pure lead, and they came out at 785 grains +/-

Cowboy,
That's a beauty rig. Any way you can take some close ups of the stock for us?

Thank you,
Actually it's already on it's way to it's new owner, but let me see if I can enlarge a couple of the pictures I have(I've got about 30 more shots of it) and get a better close up of the wood. I'll try and do that today and get them posted.

600 Overkill,
This is probably as good as it's going to get, I can build them ok, but when it comes to getting pictures of them and editing those shots, I'm not very good, computers and cameras just aren't skills I have. I hope these will work for what you wanted to see.

Its amazing what these old guns were capable of ,if you read Samuel Bakers accounts on buffalo its amazing ,evidently though they had to be loaded flat out to achieve these results, 16 drams of powder, ouch!, John Taylor used a 10 bore with good results on elephant and rhino when ammo for his cartridge guns was scarce

I'm the lucky owner of this rifle Smiler

I would highly recommend Colin to anyone looking for something like this. He is very attentive to what the customer wants and he communicates well throughout the process. And as you can see he does great work. Getting to watch the rifle being built on his website was great.

Great rifle. Can you make a double 4 bore?
2xSmoothbore config or 1 smooth/ 1 rifled for both ball and shot hunting?

Karl.
