Made the dealer order it for me through brownells... Which probably wasn't the cheapest way. But I emailed Brownells and one of their techs said theirs doesn't have that C-clip... Hefty piece of steel! I'm so happy now that I have the action. The thing didn't come with any manual so I figured out how to take out the firing pin thingy and stuff by trial and error. As part of the rifle project, I thought I wanted to change the 2 position safety and trigger at first. But the safety along with the bolt shroud looks nice and is good enough for me, I think. The trigger is pretty nice too and I've been playing around with the single set feature(I can dry fire it right??). Mines have no C-clip and the serial is 0002XX. I am planning on gettin' a barrel in the summer maybe... Maybe a Shilen barrel because I read somewhere that they make "fast" barrels and there are quarter ribs on brownells for them. Barrel length will be about 24-26 inches. I have some questions: The safety to said to block the sear and trigger if I remember correctly... Is that safe enough? I'd hate to have problems with the safety like the 2-pos ones on Rem 700's... Any tips or advice for building a 416 rigby on a CZ? Thanks!

I have built several rifles on the CZ550. Did you get the 375 action or the 416 Rigby action? There is a little difference in the ramp shape, and the rail width, plus the bolt face. Building a 416 Rigby is easy on the CZ550. This has been discussed many times, search the archives in the gunsmithing forum and the big bore forum. Briefly: Face the receiver ring, lap the lugs, polish rails & ramp, chamber & thread the barrel, put a recoil lug on the barrel, NECG Masterpiece sights, barrel band swivel lug, good bedding job, two cross bolts, tang clearance, etc. A No. 6 contour barrel works out about right for weight and balance.

I have the 416 action but the mag box says "375 H&H" I think I want a Lilja barrel now... Does it require lots of work to hold an additional fourth round? Thanks!

I think the 375 mag box is the same for all magnum cartridges, I recall my original CZ550 416 Rigby has the same markin as yours. It's notmuch needed for the 4:th round to fit. I solved it by bedding the magbox a little deep. To make it "for real" I think you need a new mag box thats a little higher, I believe that CZ makes a version with holds 4 down. At least a european dealer sells this as an option. Perhaps you can weld on some extra material on the original mag box...? (This is not for me to answer, RobGunbuilder or some other smith would be a better source for this info)

Some of the CZ 550 boxes are marked 375 H&H and have two ribs formed into the sheet metal on each side of the box, one vertical rib fore and aft on each side of the box. Some CZ 550 Magnum boxes are smooth or flat walled, and I cannot remember if they are marked. I think if you just add 1/10" (0.100") to the sheet metal box depth, it will easily hold 4 of the .416 Rigby, and getting a smooth walled box will add to the internal capacity. You can have a new box made or modify the existing one. Changing the follower and spring may be necessary for ribbed versus non-ribbed box, and that is another way to add internal capacity. Since you are starting from scratch with the action, it should be no problem as you will need a custom fit stock to do it right, and any feeding concerns will be part of the basic job.

Thank you for the replies. Mines have those 2 vertical grooves or ribs. I remember Mr. Wisner saying something about making a follower or botteom metal that adds 1 to the mag capacity. I think the project will be paused for a while though, so I can gather up some dough for other things... I'm wondering about the 2 position safety of the CZ. Forward is fire and back is safe. Is it positive enough? Thanks!
