I am certain that it has been discussed before, but I'll ask anyway... I just picked up a fantastic 1909 Argentine Mauser action, and wanted to build a 404J. Should I be aware of any problems, as in strength, feeding issues, or size limitations, or can this action be easily opened up for the 404? I'm sure there are a lot of them out there, I would just like to know up front what it will entail, and if there are any caveats, to make sure whichever 'smiths work on it are aware of them prior to getting into trouble. Thanks ahead for your advice.

In a nutshell, yes the M98 DWM ’09 Argentine Mauser action can be can be used as the basis of a 404J…many have been so used in the past. The two things you need to assure before turning it over to your selected gunsmith to make this happen are: 1) Is the gunsmith M98 Mauser knowledgeable? And 2) Is the gunsmith big bore knowledgeable? If both question are not yes, along with the offer of a listing of past customers with similar work accomplished, then you need to look for another gunsmith. Aggie, Tip Burns Canyon Sporting Arms can turn that action into a 404 Jeffery. While you are talking to him ask about the new Mauser Model M03 in 404 Jeffery. I just bought one. The 404J's were originally built on standard length actions. Several 404 builds have been chronicled pictorially on AR. Do some searches. Most smiths in the know recommend recarburizing/heat treating with the 1909 and most other milsurp actions. Duane Wiebe makes great drop box bottom metal for the 404. Go to: Duane Wiebe's bottom metal I bought the 4MXJ for my 416 Rigby Project. It holds 5 404j's down. His 4MX holds 4 down. Matt FISH!! This advise is right on the mark. When I built mine (on a 1908 DWM ) there were no hitches simply because my GS was experienced with both areas and the result speaks for itself. Von Gruff.
