Gents,

Does the 3/10's of an inch difference between the Lott and the Win qualify as a long throat?

I want to use the Lott chambered gun as a 458 Win. only. Cost of brass or I would just load all the rounds down.

That will make for a sloppy long throat, which a standard .458 Win Mag has anyway.

However after a couple of hundred rounds of .458 Win Mag, you might start roughening the last 0.3" of the Lott chamber and then get sticky extraction if you used the .458 Lott standard ammo.

Buy Lott brass and load it down to the 2150 fps with 500 grainers that is the classic killer, or use 450 grainers at 2300 fps for just as good effect.

You may also have some problems with brass stretching, especially with hot loads.

Just download the full length brass. If you want the 458 Lott to be a pussycat, use 350 gr 458 win mag loads, 76-80 gr of RL-7 works great.

As already stated, an exclusive diet of .458 Win. Mag. ammo in a Lott chamber will erode the front of the chamber over time (as will a steady diet of .38Spl. ammo in a .357Mag. chamber).

If you want a rifle chambered in .458 Win., get one, as it will probably be less expensive than a .458 Lott.

Otherwise, buy Lott brass (or basic .375H&H-length belted brass) and load it to .45-70 or .458 Win. levels.

I consider anything else false economy.
