Stock Falure on the .500 BPE Cogwell & Harrison ... a painful experience. I bought this rifle in December an had inspected it, finding a crack in the stock that ran throuhg the wood around both lock plates, that at one time had been glued or accuglassed. The dealer said if I had any problems with it he would make it right.

One of my Christmas gifts from my family was some 3" brass, woodliegh 440 grain bullets( the BP type) and dies. I went to Graeme Wright's book " Shooting the British Double Rifle" and started to reload using the the mild "Nitro for black" loads he lists. I loaded up 20. Well off to the Range. I set up a target at 50 yards. The first shot was dead on at 4 inches high at 50 yards. The next shot..Bang ..I felt a painful and numb feeling in the palm of my right hand ... The stock had gave way and the skin of my hand was now pinched in the NEWLY OPENED CRACK. I extracted my hand with a now fastly forming blood blister on my palm.

I called the dealer and true to his word he said "send the rifle back." I will get my money back or he has a .470 nitro Rodda hammer gun I may up grade to. (that would make three Roddas for me..I think I am cursed to only own second rate double rifles)

Important:

1) know your dealer

2) inspect and recheck

3) keep your safty glasses on

If you hang on the rifle for any reason, I can recommend a great (but not cheap) stock doctor. Dave Wolf does a lot of shotgun stock repair and refinishing for Briley in Houston. He rehabbed an old Army Navy Boxlock shotgun and did a superb job. He showed me several shattered stocks he put back together. Impressive work. He has his own process of drawing the old oils out of the stock, which I understand is a big part of their weakness around the action. Let me know if you'd like a contact #. Bob
