M1TankerBig Bore rifle club in Siera Vista, AZ
The local gun shop is starting up a big bore club here in Sierra Vista, AZ. The caliber requirement as of right now is .40 cal and larger. I am going to suggest they drop it to 9.3x62 to make it more in conformity with what the African hunts require. Their first shoot is going to be the 22nd of this month. For those of you who are interested please PM or email me and I will pass the info on to you. It sounds like it is going to be a lot of fun.

Charles Mc WilliamsM1 i hate to tell you this but a .375 bore is not considered a big bore in most circles. .40 as you have stated is the min. cal to obtain that status. Sorry lad. Charlie

UH HUMMM,
If we are going to be stuffy old traditionalialist then another point of order is called for. In as far as smokeless powder rifles are concerned the various .416's .404's .425's are considered large medium bores. Big bore starting at .458 and up.

Let me know the specifics Yuma is not that far away.

I want to suggest the 9.3 and 375 as the mininum because they are the legal mininum for DG in so many places in Africa. It would also allow a lot more people to participate.

I do understand what you are trying to acomplish, and did not mean it to be ofensive in any way. I was just trying to point out what has been the rule for many years. I just go by them as the rest of us do, stuffy old tradionalist or not.

LogicBeanM1,
Great to see there is some interest in Big Bores in Sierra Vista.
I was stationed at Fort Huachuca 1992 to 1997.
I traded for my first Big Bore, a Ruger M77 458 WinMag while I was there.
What gun shop is putting on the Big Bore Shoots?
Is it at the range out on Hwy 90?
Anywho, good luck to you all on the shoots.

PS, I used to chase some monster Coues on fort Huachuca, how is the deer hunting these days.

AtkinsonMost big bore shoots have a small bore plainsgame shoot, medium bore (375) shoot, and big bore shoot 40 cal. and over...med and big bore are irons and the plainsgame scoped...

The big Coues bucks are still around. I saw a couple of real primo trophies last fall.
The gun shop that is sponsoring the shoots is the "Trail Boss" in Sierra Vista. They are the only real gun shop left in town. There is a very small shop that has maybe 2 dozen guns in Huachuca City.
The range they are using for the matches is located almost directly the Sierra Vista range on 90 and Tombstone.

LMFAO!!!
Charlie,
only relatively recently was the 577 considered to be anything but a heavy medium
guess it depends on timeframe and prespective, right?
of course, this was when the 8 was the entry to bigbore, and the 4 WAS a heavy...
of course, by measurement only, the 45/70 is a bigbore (it aint.. it's just GOT a .458 hole in it) and nearly EVERY 375 cartridge is far more powerful than a "classic" 45/70...
