JABS: Try 400gr Swift A-Frame, using IMR 4320 powder. I use 72gr, and get 2385fps out of a 24" bbl. RL-15 will also give good results.

I have no loads for any other bullet weight. The 400gr TBBC, and the Swift are the only bullets I've used on buffalo. Four were shot with TBBC, and two with the Swift bullets.

My personal choice was the Jack Carter Trophy Bonded Bear Claw, but my supply dwindled to next to nothing, so I switched to Swift. They have proven to be quite adequate, both in accuracy, and similiar velocity.

Expect to have the bullet somewhat compressed utilizing the above load. Be sure to reduce your beginning load(s) by at least 10% of what I load, and shoot in my rifle.

good luck

,,,,,Jabs ;;;;I,ve had a couple 416 Taylor riflesand I,m very fond of the caliber...My favorite load is a 350 gr bullet pushed by 74.5 gr IMR 4320 and any 350 gr bullet...It produced 2450 fps from my 18 " barreled Montana and the 19.5 "Shaw barrel on my 17 Enfield...70.5 gr of IMR 4320 was the max load for 400 gr bullets .I got right @ 2300 fps with it......Depending on how you had your rifle built ,, the Taylor is a great little Big rifle....The A-Square manule lists sevral loads for the 416 Taylor .. I hope you enjoy yours.....

Very nice JABS! Looks a lot like my 416T...I have a very similar stock on mine.

Tell us some more about it (barrel length, sites, stock mfger, barrel mfger, etc).

One of my pet loads is 73gr RL 15 under a 400gr Swift A-frame. I get 2400fps with that load. The same load shoots well with the 400gr Hornady RN.

I also had great accuracy with the 370gr NF CPS over 71.5gr RL 15 (about 2450 fps).

Cheers,
Canuck

Jabs,
I really like the bolt handle! Right there where you can find it when you need it in a hurry. Will it clear a scope or is it for open sights only? Great gun, Bryan

I had NECG sights installed and probably will never pur a scope on it, but it will fit a 2-7X33 if the need arises. The action is from a 300 WM built on what I believe was a Whitworth mauser action. I really like the way that the bolt handle feels as well, it makes it almost impossible to miss on a followup shot. It has a 24" Krieger bbl and weighs 8.5lbs. It really balances well and I can't wait to shoot it this weekend! I bought some RL15 and some 4320. I will take all of your load suggestions with great happiness! They are hard to come by.

Don't forget to check out The 416 Taylor Webpage

Brian still has up the incorrect (A-Square) cartridge dimensions, but other than that, the website is a gem for 416 Taylor info.

Congratulations on your very beautiful and very practical rifle. I think that the 416 Taylor is perhaps the most practical 416 (and 40 cal) around. I have a 416 Howell, but it has not particular advantages over the Taylor. Again, congratulations and Weidman's Heil. Kudude

Tuff rifle JABS.
Can I pop in a qustion regarding recoil ?
I have been pondering a 416 Taylor myself for some time, based on a M77 Ruger in 338 Winmag.
SS/laminated stock.
I´m a bit recoil shy, but shoot 375 H&H without problems, as well as 338 Winnie and a very light 35 Whelen.
But I guess the 416 Taylor will be a different cup of tea ??

Arild I built two 416 taylors on Ruger mkII that were 338's they turn out just great. They weigh 10lbs on the head with 25 in douglas barrels scope loaded and sling.

The recoil is more then my 338 ruger and 300 wm.s but if you are shooting full power loads out of your 375 I belive you can shoot the taylor.

I shoot IMR 4064 in mine and it likes it.

Try putting on a Pachmayer F990 pad. It will really help with the recoil.

Take good care and nice rifle,

How much stock reinforcement is needed for the 416 Taylor?
I see the one cross bolt. Is there a barrel recoil lug also?
Does anyone have any trouble with useing 300 Win mag cases necked up to 416? I bought several hundred once fired 300 win cases to go with my barrel that's still sitting in it's box.

I had trouble even necking up 338 casings. It is a lot easier to use 458 cases and neck down. well well have lots less trouble.

I have 1,000 458WM cases to split between my 458 and this rifle. I also bought 100 of the Jamison Brass 416 Taylor stuff. We will see which work better. Tomorrow I get to finally shoot it. I think that I will need that Pachmayr!

;;;;;;I,ve had 2 stocks on 416,s break up from recoil on 416,s .. Hopefully yours has a 2nd recoil lug under the barrel....Annealing the necks will help in necking up 338 ,or 300 brass , as will Lee dies with the eliptical expanded button...I really do like the bolt handle....The recoil is very simular to the 375 unless you push it up to 416 Rem velocity ....And if you slow it down to 404 Jeffries or 450/400,vel it is REALLY fun ....and makes a great genral hunting rifle....I see Midway has 400 gr Hornady soft points.inter locks for a reasonable price.....

Went out over the weekend with some handloads with BLC2:
400gr. Partition
70.0gr - 2161fps
71.0gr - 2192fps
72.0gr - 2222fps

350gr. Speer
73.0gr - 2325fps
74.0gr - 2345fps
75.0gr - 2383fps
76.0gr - 2427fps

I was not impressed with BLC2 in my gun. With compressed loads, it was not giving much in the way of velocity or pressure.
I am going out later today with RL15, maybe the results will be better.

Jabs,

Great looking rifle hope it shoots as well as it looks.

I have a 15 inch 416 Taylor pistol barrel for my Encore that SSK made for me, out of all my big bore handguns this is the best as far as recoil goes can shot it all day. Took a Bison with it 3 years ago in Wyoming one shot never knew what hit him. I'm sure in a rifle it's even better.

.......The 416 Taylor seems to need lots of compresion to get good velocity. A long drop tube and a vibrator can settle the powder so the loads won,t be over compressed...I had low velocity with RL 15 ..I bet H 4895 would work well .IMR 4320 works very well in the Taylor...The A-Square manuel shows that 72 gr. of H 4895 is the Max. load and yeilds 2380 fps with the Triad of bullets in 400 gr weight....

Hi: I'd always been impressed with the .416 Taylor...great cartridge! I was going to build one once, then
opted for a quite similar one...except unbelted...a ".416 Newton"...formed by necking up a .35 Newton (or
.30 Newton) case to .416.

The case capacity is nearly the same as the .416 Taylor, dimensions close too.

So far, my rifle likes IMR 4320 Powder...I use the load data for the .416 Taylor...with 400 gr. & 350 gr
bullets.

My .416 Newton weighs 10 & 1/2 pounds & wears a 1.5-6X Pentax Scope, 22" barrel, Bell & Carlson Medalist
stock (has the aluminum bedding block) and a Harry Lawson installed muzzle brake bringing overall barrel
to 24" length.

Rifle shoots great, still experimenting with loads...but so far 4320 works best.

Best Regards,

Tom

On how it shoots....It weighs 9 lbs. and gives some brisk recoil due to the relatively non-existent recoil pad. I am definitely going to get a new pad!

Another thought...your rifle seems a little light
for the cartridge..you may want to think about having a mercury recoil reducer installed in the buttstock. This will give you additional weight as well as the mercury reducing effect. I have one in my .416 Newton which is 10.5 pounds with scope.
Best Regards,
Tom

Mine weighs about 9 lbs and the recoil isn't bad at all with a standard Pachmayer decelerator pad. BUT, I have tried another 416 Taylor that probably weighs about the same that was fitted with a Pachmayer F990 pad and it is noticable easier on the shoulder. I have also shot a 416 Rem Mag with the same pad and it was sweet to shoot too.

Since the LOP on my Taylor is a little short anyway, I am thinking of swapping my standard decelerator out for the F990.

Cheers,
Canuck

Nice! Your velocities are similar to what I get with mine, although mine has a slightly shorter barrel.

I am sure you are happy with that performance! 1.5" groups at 100yds with open sights is nothing to sneeze at.

Canuck
