Does anyone know of any .458 500gr. bullets that will reliably expand at ~1050fps on game?

Maybe this will help a little bit. I had good luck with Hawks in 45-70 and deer but these were 400g, velocity around 11-1200, I think they were the .025 jacket.

I don't know if Hawk makes 500g in .025 jacket, you could ask. Just guessing that this would be a reasonable choice.

Northfork cup point solid. Minimal expansion but they do work as designed.

They have a 500gr. RN with an .035" jacket for $52/50. I'll contact them and see if the bullet will expand at subsonic velocities.

I checked out NorthFork; their bullets seem to be designed for higher veloccities. Even the PP is designed for minimum of 1700fps. Thanks, anyway.

Lehigh makes a controlled fracturing bullet, it's 520gr.

I am a cast .458 Win mag deer hunter. No need to expand a RN or Flat nosed cast 425 grain bullet. Kills like the Hammer of Thor. Don't know what you shooting at but Subsonic usually means "thru a can" and cast doesn't work well there. The old 405 Remington bullet was soft lead with a thin jacket and a flat nose. They expanded if you threw them against the wall. Don't know if you can find those or not nowadays.

I saw that, but they are very long bullets (465gr. 1.8" and 570gr. 1.955") and I may not be able to use them in a .458 SOCOM AR-15.

The .458/500gr Nosler Partition is 1.443" and the Swift A-Frame is 1.43" by comparison.

That is correct, this is for a suppressed rifle. I may have some of the 405gr. bullets in the reloading cabinet.

Have Gerard make you something for your specific application. Easy enough if you aren't in a hurry.

Word on the street is Detroit Ammo is soon to release a 500gr expanding subsonic bullet/458 SOCOM ammo.

That looks a whole lot like a swaged brass case there, Tony. Any info on them?

As ugly as those are, I hope they're prototypes!

I'd like to hear more about this, jeffe. I've had a can in my sights for a few months now. The socom's have been of interest to me, but can't decide an AR upper or a bolt gun.

With a phone call to Tromix for a complete upper, I was ready to go once it was delivered.

With a bolt-action, I'd need to buy a barrel blank and ship it to SBR in Brunswick, GA who would turn chamber and thread the muzzle for $155 using a licensed Teppo Jutsu reamer.

I'm thinking that's the logical way to go for me, at a bit lower cost for multiple calibers. Still have to get off my rear and start the paperwork for the suppressor.

Expect to wait 9-12 months; there was a mad rush to beat the 41F deadline.

How about a semi-soft lead, such as 50% wheel weights and 50% pure lead?

George, the Speer 400 grain SPFN would seem to me to be perfect for this application.

sorry, no .. still no can .. but subs by themselves are less sound pressure than supers-bring-suppressed -- in some cases

The Remington 405 grain softpoint is loaded to about 1050 fps in the green box 45/70 load. It expands well at that velocity.

If you find they meet your needs I probably have a hundred. I shoot only cast in my bolt 458 nowadays. I was just saving them for a rainless day.

Im fairly certain the Hawks are exactly what your looking for..I have found them to be incredibly soft in every caliber Ive used them in...They worked well in the old Winchesters and I found them to be perfect for broadside shots on deer and elk in my 45-90 and 45-70..The had too much expansion for angling shots however...In my .338 they were just too soft regardless of the jacket thickness offered, I shot about 30 head of PG with them, lots of separations and those that didn't the lead was loose in the jacket and almost out....I think they would work for you and they are not all that expensive so give them a try with the thinnest jackets, and you may want a thicker jacket..
