What sights for a custom? Login/Join

I'm sure some of you saw my thread about my first magnum build. (The CZ actioned .500 A Square). I am wondering what sights you guys prefer on your customs? Do you stick with the more classic express sights or go for a more modern adjustable style?

I am leaning more towards an adjustable rear sight, maybe something similar to the Remington 700 rear sight. What pushes me away from the express is haveing the sights cut. As far as I know there is no one in my area that will do it and I don't want to send the whole rifle off. Also, how much ammo do you usually have to provide for the sights to be cut, say with a 2 leaf folding rear?

So what do you guys like and use, and why?

PS- My front sight will be a hooded bead.

Why put 300 yards worth of sights on a 100 yard rifle?

Personally, I'd put a rock-solid single fixed blade on the back and a good sized bead up front.

Yesterday, I had my gunsmith order an NECG adjustable front and peep rear for my Ruger LH MKII in .395 Max. I'm used to shooting receiver sights both hunting and in competition. My older eyes also find that "circle" easier to work with.
Referring to ForrestB above, once zeroed at 100yds, these sights will stay that way until someone else owns the rifle...or I find another bullet to work with.

With regards to the NECG rear PEEP,

Once zeroed can it be removed and stored in your pack as a back up to a scope ? Or is the windage effected

From what I've been told by other users, there's no change in zero...or at least not enough to notice considering the ranges and positions it would be used.

Max,
I'll have one of those NECG Ruger peeps on my .395 Ruger Max too. It is nice. Much better than the one they make to fit Weaver-style bases. I heard at one time that NECG was going to make a peep to fit the CZ base, but I haven't seen one yet.

Bigfatts,
That sight you have shown looks like the one on the latest M70 Classic big bores. It is good.

Here is my all-time favorite, made by Wisner, a copy of the old M70 Pre-64 African sight. Notice that I filed this one to flat-top-square-notch for use with a big gold patridge. I do have one other rifle with one of these that I left as a shallow V:

All good responses.

The NECG peep sight for the CZ is out and will be putting them on a 30-06, 416 Taylor, and 458 WM. I am, though, having the protective ears filed down some so they do not block so much of the view.

As fond as I am of express sights, even a ghost ring size peep is much more accurate.

Dido's on the ghost ring peep most accurate and quickest acquisition to target. Of course that's behind 51 year old eyes. I've gone with Jimmy Brockman's peep and front tridium post on the front. IMO, although the Ruger peep is beefy there is a tunnel effect around the peep window which I have removed some steel in times past and drilled the hole out some, this has improved target view.

Wow! Didn't know I'd be in such august company on that sight option...and I mean that as a genuine compliment.
Will and Dirklawyer: Could you take a photo of your modified peep sights and post it? I'd be very interested.
The front NECG sight will be an "optic red."

Ooh, where would you get one of the CZ reciever sights? That sounds like a nice option.

Good question.
Thanks to Will for that info.
I cannot find a picture of a CZ peep at the New England Custom Gun site.
They are showing peeps for Ruger, Weaver, EAW, and 22RF-grooved.

Jeffeosso has talked about machining the CZ rifle integral base to accept an NECG peep like the Ruger or Weaver.

The Weaver would be easier to fit, but it is big and fugly. The Ruger is much nicer but would take more work. Should be done so as to maintain use of the CZ scope rings ... or go whole hog and adapt the CZ rifle to use of Ruger rings.

Will is keeping the picture of the NECG-CZ peep to himself?

You can go to Brockman rifles web page and go to his sights page. If you cannot find it let me know. The pop-up peep is a neat setup.

Like RIP, I use the Wisner sight, usually buy them 3 or 4 at a time, as they are not always available...

I also like the barrel band rear and front sights, and NECG makes them, so you have no problem there...

Another good option is a barrel band front sight, with a 3/32 bead or Partridge gold faced post, a barrel band swivel, and a Talley Peep sight that slides on to the talley scope base..or Brockman has a pop up peep on a Talley base for some actions...

I most certainle wouldn't do that. The Remington was just an example I used. It was the first sight that popped into my head when I thought about what I was looking for. Right now I am between express sights (one folding leaf, one fixed) and the reciever sight if anyone happens to know where the NECG for the CZ can be found.

Heres my question for those with scope base mounted peep sights: is the peep too far forward for a ghost ring? would a tang mounted peep be a better option?

The peep sight on the Talley base or the pop up from Borckman is a Ghost Peep, a perfect hunting sight...I could send you a picture of one mounted on a .416/375 Ruger I am building and I went with the Talley slip on peep and a NECG barrel band front and gold faced partridge that is .007 high (the highest) so that I can file it down to zero..The Talley has windage..If interested send my your email address at ray@atkinsonhunting.com

Thanks for the info on the Wisner reproduction. Jim had 5 available so I ordered 2 today. I like them better than the NECG type. I have 2 rebarrels being done so the info was timely.
