I am looking into forming 300 Ultra brass from 404 Jeffery brass using a 3 die set from Huntingtons. I would like some opinions on who makes the best brass for this.
Thanks,
Vince

Vince,

Both RWS and Norma make good brass for the 404.

You might like to check your rifle if it will accept the 404 brass, as the Remington Ultra brass has a rebated rim.

Thanks, Saeed. I just e-mailed you and was hoping you could see if one of your Ultras will except the rim on the 404. I have ordered single cases, but it will be a while before I have my brass to check.
Thanks, again.

Vince,

I have just tried RWS brass in our 2 300 Ultrifles. It wil fit in one, but not the other.

Cleaning up the bolt face is not to difficult. If you wish to do it. I recommend you install a Sako extractor while your at it.

MAST(BeLL) also makes excellent .404 Jeffery brass, as well as unformed cylinders with blank headstamps. The BeLL brass i have for my .416 Rigby Seems to be stronger than the Norma brass I have for the same caliber. Comparing sectioned cases it is slightly thicker in the head and web area. Is it possible that MAST makes Remington's Ultra Mag brass? The reason I ask is this: I was at a cartridge show a couple of years ago, and Jim Bell was there with a couple of large boxes full of BeLL cases in various odd chamberings. One case I found in those boxes was a basic cylindrical case headstamped R-P Ultra Mag. FWIW, there was also a lot of HDS headstamped brass in those two boxes.

Vince, I have formed many different cases from 404 Jeffery brass. With the availability of Ultra brass, it ain't worth the expense and effort to form Ultra from Jeffery. Try Huntingtons, they have Ultra brass in boxes of 500. I bought 500 338 Ultra cases from Huntingtons recently. Plus most 404 Jeffery brass will not fit the Remington 700 bolt face. If you open the bolt face up to fit, then you have a situation where the original Ultra brass is not a good fit and the extractor may slip off the rim. It all boils down to possible, yes, but practical, a strong no.

My question is why??????????

Buy 300 Ultra brass, it is not anymore expensive than 404 and a set of forming dies is very costly and 404 won't always work...
