BigFiveJackSound Bolt Actions To Base A 500 A2 Caliber On
In another thread I asked about Satterlee compared to Granite Mountain
for a rifle that would basically be a 500 A2 just using a bullet about .495"
diameter, under .500 inch for sure. I want five rounds to fit in the rifle
including one chambered. I know the P14 and Mod 1917 actions are large
enough, and so too is the big action from CZ, and also Ruger. Who builds
the actions that Reimer Johannsen uses in his big bores? Name all the com-
panies who make a sound bolt action large enough for my idea. Thanks.

shootawayIf you want a bolt rifle for those big cartridges you might want to look at Joe Smithson.I believe he has some experience with big cartridges and if his rifles work as good as they look...Two words come to mind, simple and beautiful. The guy looks a bit like elvis-lol.

RIPMr. Gottfried Prechtl of Golmatic makes the Magnum Mauser 98 actions used in Johannsen and SIG Mauser Banner rifles.
http://www.golmatic.de/The Ruger RSM has a wide but shallow box that will not hold 4 down, only three, in .416 Rigby or 49/460Wby.
You will have to get custom bottom metal, if you use an RSM.
Might as well get rid of the solitary-lug recoil plate,
then add a Remington-style washer recoil lug,
and add a recoil lug to the barrel.
The barrel might be rebored.
The stock might be salvaged with addition of a second crossbolt,
and if your new bottom metal projects below the stock.
A lot of bother for integral quarter rib.
CZ 550 Magnum would be as good as anything, barreled and dressed up to your preferences.

fourboreBig5,
I live in a neighboring state, and fear the spread of a 50 cal ban. Did a NY state ban pass? Did they ban ALL rifles firing over 499 caliber? I was hoping that stupidity would fail or worse case target certain military rounds or perhaps grandfather some of the old classics. For instance the 577NE or 505/500Gibbs/Jeff. How about the 577 blackpowder loads or the 50 2.5 sharps or 50/110 Winchester?

Thanks H.K. I did NOT know that.

Thanks for the link RIP.

FourBore I'm not in NY but close. I do
believe certain things are coming though.
I hate to say it, but I DO fear it.

dirklawyerJack, not too long ago a guy here on AR posted his new 500 Jeffery that was built on the Ruger M77 magnum action and stock it was done very well. If it was my choice I'd use the Ruger action and stock (they're both plenty strong) as my foundation then have Danny Pederson (Classic Gun and Barrel works) put a new cut rifled barrel on with integral quarter rib, barrel banded swivel, and banded front site and call it good. You would have a great rifle and a great price. Find a used Ruger magnum (approx. 1500) plus Danny's work (approx. 1500) plus a reblue your done for less than 3500 dollars. Only thing I'd change on the order is the caliber from a 500A2 to a 500 Jeffery being such a nostalgic caliber it's not like you Jack to not go for the 100 year old calibers.

I made BOLD and RED that last section. Yes that's true.
But I want NOT a .505" nor .510" diameter bullet. I
DOwant a diameter bullet of .495"-.499" specifically to be
under the 1/2" measurement. So, since I'm going there, I
figure I can just go with the fairly new basic .460 Weatherby
brass, {the basis for the 500 A2} resized to fit the .49 cal-
iber bullet using "straight" walls, no bottle neck.

ScottSJack,
If your get one of the older Ruger RSM (heavier barrel contour than those presently manufactured) you can simply have the barrel rebored and rerifled, this should cost around $350/$400 including chambering. You will need a custom chamber since you are going down to the 0.495" bore though. The RSM will hold three 500 A Squares, I know I have one in 500A2. Feeding can be an issue with flat point bullets in the Rugers as the mag box is very wide and it is difficult to open up the width and depth of the receiver's feed ramp to allow flat point feeding. Also, if going to a cartridge derived from the belted Weatherby case (460 WM for instance) the 416 Rigby chamber will not clean up for the first 0.25" or so. This would require that the barrel be set back several threads to maintain timing of the integral ribs. Since you are wildcatting anyway, and if you chose the RSM, I would suggest basing your wildcat off of the 416 Rigby case and not the belted Weatherby, therefore eliminating this issue.
By the way, properly bedded the stock Ruger recoil lug system works fine and the use of a Remington M700 style recoil plate sandwiched between receiver ring and barrel is NOT required.
Good luck.

RobgunbuilderA lowly .416 rigby CZ550 is the easiest action there is to make a 500a2 on. It takes almost no work on the rails and only minor ramp shaping. The ribs need to be pressed out of the mag box, and the extractor reshaped, but thats it. Screw off the old barrel and on with the new. crossbolt and stick back in the old stock. less than $1000 out the door.-Rob

Thanks Rob!

What's the difference between the 550 and the 602 CZ's?

Yes - I will second that motion.
I know from experience.
Go with the CZ (and I would add, for your maker, go with AHR), and you'll be shooting your rifle long before it would be possible to do so with any other option. Plus, you'll have a fine, well-made and reliable DG rifle, fit for any beast or occasion.
I did just that and have never had any reason to regret it.
