I've got a Leupold 1.5-5 X 20mm on mine, and it works fine, but it is not the best in the early morning or evenings, or in shaded areas in tall grass after buffalo. It lacks luminosity.

I think the newer VX6 Leupold might be a better option, 1-6 X 24mm illuminated, since it will be brighter, a little more powerful (6X), a true 1 power and has a choice of illuminated reticles like the German #4 or the post-circle-dot. Leupolds do have a lifetime guarantee and they have great customer service. They also weigh less than just about every other similar powered scope and cost about half as much as a similar European scope.

You shouldn't need an extended eye relief scope on the 404 - mine doesn't, and it's a Model 70 as well.

If you have a hunt booked or one in mind, are cats involved? If so, consider a 3x9 illuminated in QD mounts (such as the trijicon) or one of the 1.7 + illuminated German scopes. I've also read good things about the VX6.

My MRC wears a Leupold 1.5x5x20. No problems with eye relief.

I have an AHR 404 and you will be surprised how little it kicks. I like power I use swaro 3.5x10 and shot a bunch of animals in cameroon with it longest 220 yds on roan closest was buffalo at 25 yds. Most prefer less power but I like it.

Depends on your use and budget....

My choice would be a Zeiss, Schmidt and Bender, or Swarovski.

The advantages of the Leupolds are price and weight.

Never used a Trijicon but some folks really like them...

I have a Schmidt and Bender 1.1-4 flash dot on my 404 and it works great in less than ideal lighting conditions against dark targets such as Buffalo and Elephant...

I have been waiting to see the 1-8 S&B is suppose to release....certainly at the top of cost scale but really nice glass...

It's not a 404 Jeffery, but I have a .423/338 Lapua Magnum in construction on a M98 Mauser FN commercial action.

Scopes are primary - Minox ZA5 1.5-8x32 w/1" tube German #4 reticle - secondary are Minoz ZA5 2-10x40 w/1" tube BDC reticle and Nikon African 1-4x22 w/1" tube German #4 reticle.

That's information, not self-promotion. I would be glad to know that you had listed it, giving me the opportunity to get it before someone else if I really wanted it.

You found a prevalent topic to your item for sale. Nothing ever wrong about that. I hope we all prefer that type of info.

I have a 1-6x24 Swaro on my AHR 404. It has worked well for me. I think it is just right for the 404 in aAfrica for everything with the possible exception of Mr. Spots in very low light. I did have trouble keeping it from slipping in the Talley rings on the AHR. Finally solved it with the liquid electric tape in the rings. Rosin did not do it. An aside, my gun likes RL 17 and the 400 and 370 grain CEB's.

Has anyone tried the Leupold Mark AR MOD 1 1.5-4x20mm P5 Dial scope?

I was looking at that for my 416 Rigby as it is 1 inch illuminated.

The Leupold tech service people said it would sit the 416 Rigby. I wonder if it is similar to the VX1 shotgun scope or more like the VX 2. the price looks more like a VX1.

I'm planning on a Weaver 1-3x20 for my 404.

The other option I looked at was the Weaver 1-5x24.

I think you'll find plenty of opinion to the contrary. I suggest the OP tries both and decides with which he is more comfortable.

Let us know what you think about the VX6 1-6. It's also on the current list for consideration for my next scope purchase.

On the 404, 416 Rem, Rigby, Ruger, 375 etc I use 3 scopes. I like the old 3X Leupold best, then the 1x4 Leupold, then the 1.5x5 Leupold. I use them with Talleys or claw QDs and usually a shallow V on the barrel or a Talleys QD peep. For DG I tend to use the iron sights.

On a 45 caliber and up big bore I only use the 2.5X compact Leupold as its the only scope that seems to hold up over time, but I seldom attach the scope as I like irons best of all on the really big bores..

I have tried most of the reticles and I prefer the standard duplex.

@#%$&^*! I am really pissed off with the terrorists for causing all this import export restrictons.

Yesterday I orderd on Optic Plannet for a Leupol illuminated scope & they have said that they cannot ship from the US!

I have a 1.5-5x20 Leupold illuminated (30mm tube).

I also like the idea of the Swaro 1-6 or VX6 and the S&B. I've looked through a Night Force 1-4x and liked it very much, but I have no experience with it in that magnification range.

Bear in mind that the look of the scope may influence your decision and some of the scopes with large occular lenses can interfere with the bolt handle if not mounted high - which I really dislike. Take the rifle and a set of rings with you to the shop...
