Sanity check....firing the 577 TRex
How many people here would shoot the 577 Tyrano cartridge as shown in the videos?
Off hand or from a bench?
How many people think they would shoot it more than once?
500grains is on my ignore list for being who he is, which is not the type of person I like, want to be around, hear from or read anything he has to say, period.

Paolo9,5x73This cannone is not for me, becuase I am more of an O'Connorite than a Keithian.
I´d do it once for the hell of it.

Gene,
did that little POP give you an alignment?!

RMillerOh yes, I would shoot it. Only offhand though. More than once I expect.

CanuckI'd love to shoot an unbraked T-rex. Specially at some 5 gal jugs of water, right after whacking a couple with my 470 Mbogo as a warm-up and for comparison.
I don't think I'd enjoy benching it, but I'd probably try that too if I was triple dog dared.

fusinoI would definitely give it a shot offhand. I doubt I would bench it, just because I KNOW that would be no fun at all.

According to Walther, those who are shooting the 577 t-rex has only a few grain of brain left...

Thanks for asking, but no thank you... it must be terrible

After firing such beast as Saeed's 577 T-rex I would seriously consider to change my last name to Flichstein, Flinchmann or Flinchovitz

My comfort level is around 416 Rigby/404 Jeffery. 500 Jeffery (JefferyDenmark's rifle) wasn't that bad and it would be the biggest caliber I ever would consider

RobertI have a .577 TRex since a couple of years! I shoot it of the bench in strings of 3 shoots. Over 3 hours I can manage to do 6 strings which equals to 18 fired rounds with full power loads ( adviced factory level ). After that, the accuracy reach a level where it is a wast of money. At least on the first 3 strings the bulletholes where touching each other.
I have a split feeling looking the videos, because it seems to me that they let shoot unexperid people with that cannon!
Is it that much fun that somebody get hurt because of lack of advice and experiance?
Robert
I think I would pass. I am beginning to shoot my .416 Rigby with confidence, but I shot a .505 Gibb and found it uncomfortable. Sufficiently so that I probably wouldn't be a good shot with it.

MinkmanI like shooting, but not that much!!!
Since owning a Lott a little over a year, and putting about 250 rounds through it, I can say that I've only felt the recoil too much a couple of times. Like shooting the next day after putting 25-50 through it. I'm a little too tender to do more than five the very next day, sometimes less due to an instant headache.
However, I would really like to shoot some classic double loads, especially .577NE, or any of those three and a quarter or half inch cartridges.
Oh! Lets not forget an old 8 bore BPE!

Paolo9,5x73Such rifles should be shot off-hand, or from stand-up rest.

Look, my experience with .500A2 was traumatic enough!
Rotert, you best be careful, or you will become "Stuttering Rob"!

Rifles like this need to be shot with a standing bench technique, thats how I sighted my .585 Nyati......it also has a break and is sighted for the light 650 gr woodleigh's

Thanks for your care - I will look after myself.
I bought that .577 Tyr 6 year after the .500 A-Square - so I had some time to prepare myself.

Hell!! i'd shoot it all day

just as soon as Saeed puts a lanyard and wheels on it!

Jeff WemmerI'd do it from offhand...Why not!
...Then I'd get out my .470 and school any .577 (Tyran) shooter out there...Speed, accuracy, range, the .470 will smoke it!!!

...the .577T is a novelty at best (although a cool one at that IMHO) and in true DG situatuions would not be an asset....too much time for recovery between shots if he's coming for you.

Glad to see folks pushing the ballistic envelope, but yikes!!!
Was thinking of developing a shoulder-fired 105mm....anybody interested???

May I ask what action your 470 mbogo is based on? Who put it together?
Any pics for us to look at? Please?
Also, have you shot any game with it, and if so, what bullet, what velocity, what distance, and can you give us a summary of the bullet's terminal performance (retained weight, penetration depth, was the penetration straight line, anything unusual about the animal's reaction, etc.).
Thanks!

jeffeossoJeff,
if a man trains with it, the 577 doesn't have to be a stunt gun...
anymore than the 4 bore is.. and at the time that the 4 bore was active, the 577 was a heavy medium.
here'sa link to my website, and if you have quicktime, you'll be able to see me (left) and gene (right) shooting the 550 express. the difference in recoil is training, only.
that's 7100 lb-ft of energy, 700gr at 2165 or so... (backed down to 2127 to be 7000 lb-ft) .. in an 11# gun.
yeah, it's not trex... but it can be trained to.
from the perspective of "a 416 kicks like hell" , 100# of recoil or 150# doesn't matter.. the second shot is impossible without training.
call MRC, tell them to build the .850 bolt, and i'll build a trex.. train with it, and fire the gun empty (3 or4 rounds) into a pie plate at 50 yards as quick as most can do it with a 416. would only take me about 6 months of every weekend training

500,
Did you have me on ignore for a couple years or something?

I bought the prototype 470 Mbogo from Dave Estergaard about 3 years ago now. Dave was willing to part with it to fund his most current 470 Mbogo. Its the Ruger RSM that Dave originally bored out and rechambered, and whacked 3 buff in Tanzania with in 1998. The whole story of the project and details on the rifle are on his website.
I have yet to whack anything animate with it, but that'll change. Hopefully this fall, but if not, for sure in 2006 when the rifle makes its return to Tanzania!

Check out
http://www.470mbogo.com ....lots of pics of the rifle, and even more video clips of me (Chris S.) and Dave shooting it (and his others).
Cheers,
Canuck

Bwana-beOffhand, definitely. More than once. Maybe more than thrice. And largely just for the cajones contest. Nothing better than a good cajones contest and a beer afterwards. Cajones, cajones, cajones.
Plus, it do look like fun. No, I'd never carry it as a weapon (well, maybe agin' a pack o' killer whitetail doe), but there's something very invigorating about being behind that much power, and then possibly even directing it somewhat purposefully.

Now that we have a good indication as to whose sanity may be in question, I will raise the bar further.
If it would be your first time shooting the 577 TRex would you want it video taped and the file viewed by everyone on the internet????

That is not really the issue. The issue is what damage an MRI will reveal.

07 July 2005, 04:39
rootbeerNo way, man! Did you see how it threw that one boy through the plate glass door and flat onto his ass on the other side? So embarrassing!! The whole world would know you're a puddin'. And then there is the one whose tablecloth it spun around and left him wondering where he was. You can see the lost look in his eyes, like asking "Wha' happen?"

redleg172By coincidence I fired my first 577 T-Rex and 500 A2 yesterday. Not as bad as I expected. Prior to this I had never fired anything bigger than a 458 Lott. Both rifles were A-Square as was the ammo. Say what you want about the coil-chek, but it made a difference. We fired a M70 in 375 then an A-Square in the same, noticible difference. We then fired a 500 A2. Four of us shot. We are all average build and age from 37 (me) to 68. The 500 was noticably more than the Lott, but still very managable. With a little practice I would feel cmfortable shooting this rifle at dangerous game and manipulating the action. The 577 was another story. It was very stiff recoil but we were all able to fire more than one round before the fun wore off. Three of use absorbed the recoil and could have fired a second shot fairly quickly, on guy took a step backward and had lost some conrtol during recoil, but nothing near what the video shows. Bottom line, I can have my fun elsewhere with less recoil but I would not hesitate to shoot the T-Rex again if challenged.

Paul HI'd not hesitate to fire a 577 T-rex, offhand. With a sufficient pile of sandbags, I'd shoot it off the bench, though I wouldn't be real keen on bench shooting it. I'd likely shoot it more than once.
The fact that I have and shoot a 458 Lott and 500 Jeffrey weigh into my decision.
If you've never fired anything bigger than a 30-06, I could understand your trepidation at lighting off a T-rex

BiggestGunThis can be a very usable cartridge if loaded down to Nitro express levels or a little better. 2500 fps simply generates way too much recoil. Art was just trying to best Weatherby. You can’t get proficient after two shots. I shoot my T-Rex at 2100fps with 750 gr bullets and find it shootable. The headache only lasts a couple of hours. I like shooting 6 rounds at a time. That’s comparable to 10 rds through my 505. Actually 460’s don’t seem nearly as brutal now as they used to. By the way, A-Square recently called to let me know they now have the brass ready. It’s $80 and change for ten. After waiting three years I finally gave up on them and went with Hornaber.

Without wanting to be alarmist, that
could be the symptom of being slightly concussed. Repeated concussions cause irreversible brain damage. Before you go out to the range again, I'd consult a neurologist. As 500 said, the issue is what damage would the MRI reveal?
