I am planning to have built a Cape Buffalo rifle for my wife. She shot my 375HH Sako off hand alright but I was wondering what the recoil in FT LBS is for the 404 Jeffries as compared to the 375HH.

I am not sure in numbers, but its noticeably more all things being equal..If she handles the .375 well, then why fix something thats not broke...The 375 will lay low anything she will hunt...

I shoot both the 404, 416 Rem, 10.75x68 and .375 and I assure you one cannot visably see a lot of difference in the final result, at least on Buffalo, Lion and Leopard...The difference may show from the .458 Lott and up, but even that plumb to the top (577) is not outstanding...

....Triad, A-Frame, ABC, Barnes Solid, Fail Safe,....in 9,5x73mm. With proper shot placement, what's "immune" to its punch!

To answer your question, it depends on how the 404 is loaded.

Comparing a 300 gr. 375 buulet at nominal velocity of 2550 fps and a 400 gr. 404 bullet at nominal velocity of 2170 fps (Ref.: Any Shot You Want), the Jeffery would actually have less ft-lb(f) of energy (about 3% less).

The 375 will kill any buff. Who knows how much more effective a 404 would be, if any, though a heavier bullet wouldn't hurt any.

So in the same weight and shape of stock rifle, she won't see any difference.

I did that last year, trimmed down my inventory and got rid of things I wasn't using much or that were too overlapping in purpose. I like my sporting rifle battery to be as simple as possible. "One gun, one load" and calibers that dont overlap too much in their roles...

All Ruger M77's - .22 rimfire M77/22, .243 RSI/M77 (soon to arrive in my safe this week or next), 30-06 M77/MkII, .375 RSM M77/MkII, .458 Win M77 and a #1.

Those rifles cover all the bases easily - six Rugers.

All kidding aside, what Mrs K might really like is a nice compact well balanced 9.3 x 74 double. They are an elegant, mild recoiling solution to a wonderful problem. They can be found used at a reasonable price and can be made to fit her by cutting and bending the stock if needed.
