Hi guys. I just got a Winchester Model 70 375 H&H. I have Weaver bases on it and am looking at putting Warne Q.D. rings on it. The scope I am going to use is a Leupold 1.5-5x20. So what is the best ring height for this application? I was thinking low or medium. Please give me your opinion. I plan on making a trip to Alaska fro hunting, and using it for pig hunting locally. Thanks, lawdogso

I hope those are steel Weaver bases as in Weaver Grandslam, Warne Maxima, or Leupold QRW, not the aluminum Weavers, please. Better make it a medium height to be sure the bolt handle and your hand easily clear the ocular bell when you work the bolt back and forth rapidly. Using the 2.5X Leupold with the smallest ocular bell of all will allow you to use the low Warnes. I am satisfied with mediums on my M70's with 1.5-5x20 Leupolds. Great combination.

I usually go with a 1/2" but have gone with a 1" And on some I have gone with 3/8" The main thing is that it The scope doesn't touch the barrel.

In this case, the 1.5-5x20 has no objective bell and will never "touch the barrel" whatever ring height is chosen. Not a factor. The only factors are the clearance of the ocular bell to manual working of the bolt, and location of the scope for good alignment of scope to eye in cheeking the rifle. That depends on the stock design too.

RIP.... Glad to know about the steel bases. I checked the ones on there and they were not. So now it seems I am starting over and going to go with new bases as well. I want a quick release system. What would you put on this rifle? Thanks, lawdogso

Either Talley or Leupold QRW. With either one it is possible to set up so there is no overhang of the ejection port by the bases. I really like the Leupold QRW best, but have half a dozen of one and six of the other on my M70's. The Leupold QRW bases are sleeker and accept the NECG peep site with no modification. The Talley peep requires machining off the rear stop on the base of the Talley, so the peep can slide on and up against the forward (functional) recoil stop. Do not feel bad about saving some money on the Leupold QRW versus the Talley. Nothing wrong with the newer Leupold QRW. Just don't get some of the first issue ones that had a round crossbolt on the bottom of the ring instead of the square recoil stop. Talley's will have a little more snob appeal if that matters to you. They do cost more.

Talley. Call Gary and tell him what you're putting it on and which scope. I'd go ahead and get the 1/4" extended front base. That'll allow you to "squeeze" a 2.5-8 in there as well if you should dedide to in the future. That's what I used on mine and it's in low rings. David P.S. I haven't tried the new Leupy QRW's yet, but they look good and they're made by Leupold, so they're bound to be good. I may have to try them on my next rifle.

Thanks for the great input guys! I ordered the Talley rings today. I had no preferance of the two except that I could call Talley and order direct from them. The man on the phone was real nice and knew just what I needed. It was painless and fast. lawdogso
