In preparation for upcoming first safari I have been doing lots of photo and video review, I have noticed some use of buttstock mounted cartridge carriers. I tried one only once and it didn't seem to be of any value. Can someone who uses them share their experience? Thanks "shoot quick but take your time"

Hint: the effective ones are made of leather, and even they can be booger to keep in place on a snappy kicker. See if Galco has one that meets your requirements. "Shoot as quickly as you can, but no quicker." - Jeff Cooper

I like the slinky synthetic ones, they are about $10. I have one on all 5 of my Blasers and most of my other rifles. It's not super handy, but it keeps you from banging your rifle up with a belt mounted cartridge keepers.

I am not a fan of them especialy on a dangerous game rifle. To me anything that hangs on the rifle that can catch on brush or my clothing and interfere with a clean quick mount is a potential accident waiting to happen. I see no advantage to it over belt carry. 465H&H

I think this is like a lot of others, just personal preferences. Some use them, but most don't. Personally, I prefer the belt. ------------------------------- Will / Once you've been amongst them, there is no such thing as too much gun. --------------------------------------- and, God Bless John Wayne. I don't care much for them so I use a belt slide. LIFE IS NOT A SPECTATOR'S SPORT!

I had one from Dick Murray was very well made, but I still did not like it. IT adds too much weight and was always catching on stuff. If your parents didn't have any children chances are you won't either.

So far this group seems to share my view. I see no advantage over belt ammo carriers. Thanks for the replies. "shoot quick but take your time"

I have some by Dick Murray on my doubles and on my Blaser R 93. I like them a lot.I do not notice the extra weight and mine have never cought on anything. On a hard kicking gun the leather does not abrade your face. Mine have gotton soaked in several rain storms with no ill effect to the leather or the gunstock. I use his leather belts and cartridges too. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY

I have both the leather and synthetic styles on various rifles and like them. The synthetic ones are from Beartooth Products and are made of neoprene. They are a real pain to get on, but there's no way they're gonna "slip." I've gotten away from hanging most anything extra on my belt anymore since the weight there tends to make me feel like my pants are always falling down!

I used one of the stretchy ones in RSA a couple of years ago and it seemed to work OK. Didn't come loose or fall off bouncing around the dirt roads and didn't seem in the way when I was carrying it. Like the guy said, personal preference but, I would use it again. "I ask, sir, what is the Militia? It is the whole people. While there are pros and cons (and snagging your butt on shrubbery or clothing in the middle of a fight seems like a pretty definitive con), an advantage of the butt cuff is that you always have a small supply of ammunition attached to your rifle. I like the slingy cheap ones. I generally "anchor" them on the rear sling swivel and they stay put. It is a convenient place to put the rounds that you remove and put back into your rifle through the day. On my 9.3x62, I carry four 286 Partition rounds in the magazine, and don't chamber a round until I need one. I carry a couple 250BT's in the keeper, and if I need to make a long shot, drop one down in the rifle, and load it instead of a 286. Sound complicated, but it really isn't. The 250's let me go all the way out to 275yds (even 300 under ideal conditions.) I also carry a couple of Woodleigh 286 round nose SP and solids in the keeper when in buff country. Kudude

Fugly, useless, not as bad as putting one on finely balanced SLE scattergun, but still....
