Does anyone make an off the shelf stock that will accomodate Blackburn / Pete Griesel drop box mags for the Mauser? Preferrably a classic style, and not in the zillion dollar range... defeats the purpose of having a fun / cheap hobby outlet.

I'm putting together a 458 Winnie, and want to do it right. I already have 09 argentine bottom metal, but I can only get three in the box on my 416 Taylor w/ same setup. Any thoughts on modifying an unfinished fiberglass stock by building up the bottom area to fit the metal? Or would this be extremely complicated and end up looking homemade?

Thanks for your thoughts,

Todd

Todd,

Did you already buy the extra deep mag box? Blackburn sort of discouraged me from using an extra deep box except for the long cartridges like the Lott. He said that extra deep boxes in the shorter/regular lenght can give rise to feeding issues.

500 Grains,

No, I haven't bought it yet. I have Oberndorf hinged bottom metal, but really wanted to get more than 3 rounds in the mag. I guess that will be okay though, I don't want to plunk down that much $$ unless it is for a drop unit. I just like that look. It would be a bit of a pain in the ass as far as stocking it, I'm starting to think.

I'm still looking for a really nice 98/22 action to use, keeping the BRNO logo on the front ring. (it will be open sights only). The 98/22 I already found is too nice to tear up.

I was also thinking of a quarter rib, but again, probably more hassle and expense than the look is worth -- I've heard the Dakota pre-fits are an approximate fit at best, which my gunsmith considers a no-fit. I guess I'll just use the big NECG island rear sight.

But I digress... Obviously I'm getting a lot of enjoyment out of planning this project. My beater 35 Whelen is going out to the smith first, this one will probably be in mid-winter.

What did you do on your 470 Capstick? I can't find the pic, but I don't remember that as having a drop box.

Gentlemen

I have a friend who has a Dakota African. Since the factory stock is complete crap it needs a replacement.

High tech makes a stock that can be inletted to use for dropbox mags. Ed brown made some rifles on the dakota action and he also used High tech stocks to get a synthetic for a big drop box action.

Now you have two to choose from

Todd,

My 470 uses a Sunny Hill box, and my 458 lott uses a Blackburn box. I can't find much difference except that the Sunny Hill cost me more than $100 extra. The gunsmith said it took him more work to polish up the Blackburn box. Functionally they are the same.

But I wanted to get Blackburn boxes while the getting was good, so I bought 4 more.
