Hello Gentleman:

I have been away for several years and am rejoining the Group, I used to be here as Group Member Hansel,

I am looking to pick fellow 416 Taylor Users brains for Reloading Data.

My Taylor has a 22 inch Pac-Nor Barrel built on a Interarms Mark X action By Steve Zinn. (I would Love to hear from Steve if he is still around).

But now that I have My practice up and running I am looking to Get back into more hunting and shooting.

In the range of 75 RL 15 with 400 of your choice should be a good starting point. OAL becomes a problem in some rifles so a drop tube may be your friend.

I too built a 416 Taylor on a Mark X.
The reloading pages on this site has Taylor info and Handloader # 180, March/April 1996 has info.

Hans, obtain a copy of Water's Pet Loads. Apparently he knew Mr. Taylor personally. Has a ton of good information.
As an aside....screw that 22" way too short of a barrel off, and install a 26" or longer. Maybe a twenty seven... Realize the true potential of the cartridge, and enjoy the "hang" of a real African rifle...... Grant.

Grant:

I have a Custom CZ 550 .416 Rigby with a 25 inch tube....As for my Short .416 Irons only rifle...For some reason everything I point it at seems to drop dead....Guess they didn't get the short barrel memo.... Smiler

You need a hammer to get 75 grains of RL-15 into the case, depending on what you made it from, or where you bought it already made.

.458 Winchester Mag conversions are the most spacious, followed by Hornady, followed by Jamison ready made. If I can get 72 grains of powder in their, I am a happy boy.

Also the 416 bullets have cannelures designed for 416 Remington Magnum or 416 Rigby cases. You will need to get the CH4D cannelure impressing tool and place cannelures so that the bullet provides maximum cartridge length for a traditional short, belted magnum.

RL-15 is a less precise formulation of N-203B (marketed here by Norma). You might want to try N-202, also by Norma. It burns a touch faster, but Bofors (makers of Norma, ATK and Rottweill powders) makes it 20 tonnes at a time for the military (147-grain to 150-grain bullets in 7.62x51 NATO. That means that its formulation does not vary, lot to lot. ATK is now marketing it as AR-Performance. I believe it was the old RL-12 powder.

A long drop tube might help a bit. If you are going to Africa, try 71-grains of RL-15. If you get any where near 2,350 fps, that is a cause for rejoicing.

If you have a Mauser lying around, it is easy to convert it, or have it converted to 416 Taylor. Starting out fresh, I would probably get a truck/boat gun in 416 Ruger, made by Ruger. With a proper length barrel (24" to 26").

Good luck.

I use 458 Win Mag Brass to form My Cases. I was splitting too many case neck going from .338 to .416. I found that I was getting very consistent cases with the 458 brass (I go slow and let the brass size/form itself).

after my initial Case forming, I fire-form with 20gr of Bullseye with a toilet paper wad capped with a soap plug (Any Bath soap works), I get perfect cases every time.

Nice work Canuck. 3.26 OAL must have mauser action? I found mine shoots the NF soft and solids similar to yours but both at 74 gr RL 15. Did you shoot yours out to 100? Have also had good results with the 400 Woodleigh. Cannot shoot Barnes as bullet is just too long for my 3.30 magazine.
