Almost everybody interested in firearms and hunting would know names of at least a few famous personalities. Elmer Keith is definitely one such.
From what I have read over the years I thought his claim to fame was mainly in taking delight in being controversial while contributing little of any use or value. I was wrong. I never knew he actually garnered so much respect, and clearly deserved at that. This video was an education.

Hunting.... it's not everything, it's the only thing.

Keith had an interesting and very hard early life. "Keith, An Autobiography" and "Hell I Was There", essentially the same, are well worth the read.

I read all his stuff and met him on occasions.

I enjoyed most of his stuff but his claim to backing down two Arizona Rangers at gunpoint is just pure BS, such never happened, and its doubtful that his hand was shattered and pressed out flat tied to a 2x4 and healed perfectly, well maybe on the hand but doubtful, picture of him riding a bucking horse going south, wrong hat he aways had the same crease in his hat but not in that picture!! but he told a good story..but hey I suspected Jesse James was like John Dillenger, not what he was cracked up too be!! faint

I good story can be entertaining whether it's true or not. Just take it for what it is.....a good story.

I enjoyed that video very much. My only resolve is about mention of the '338 OKH' - was there ever such a thing? I don't recall that it showed his 333 OKH, surely one of the most iconic rifles in America.

Kinda like Capstick. Entertaining for sure, but some experts question his veracity. Me, I'm no expert, he is at the very least a fun read.

The book that got me interested in hunting as a 10 year old was Jim Corbett's Man Eaters of Kumaon

Living in and hunting around Helena, I recognized a lot of places he wrote about in his autobiography.

What force or guile could not subdue,
Thro' many warlike ages,
Is wrought now by a coward few,
For hireling traitor's wages.
