Has anyone used the woodleigh 400g prp in the 458wm? I'm looking for a good 400g bullet to start at the 2000-2200fps range. What's the profile of this bullet? Does it have a decent BC?

Welcome to AR.
While I have not used the 400 Woodleigh I have used the 480 Woodleigh RN soft on buffalo. It worked great expanding and penetrating well. I also used 2 500 gr Swift A Frames on another buffalo and they too expanded and penetrated great. All out of my 450 No2 with a velocity @ 2100 to 2150fps.

What game do you intend to shoot with this bullet?

Thanks NE450,

Its for moose, maybe other NA game as well. I've tried 405 rem and 400g speer at this velocity, both were very accurate, but I want something a little tougher, and mybe one that might shoot a little flatter. I've also tried the 400g Hawk round nose, wasnt quite as accurate. I'm working on 350g speers right now, we'll see how they go, but I'd like a 400g bullet.

dean, I'ld give the 400gr NorthFork a try. Mike's bullets are incredibly accurate & terminal performance is about all you could ask for. I use them in my .404j.

Dean,
I agree with Fred.
I would try the 400 and the 450 grain North Fork,
And the 400 and 450 grain Swift. Use the one that shoots best in your rifle.
I am a fan of the 458.
With a premium 400 to 450 grain bullet it is a great choice for BIG North American game.

The BC of the 400 gr protected point woodleigh is .420 and sd = .272. Reccomended impact velocity of bewteen 1900-2400 fps.

It would be an excellent bullet for your application.

Thanks everyone, I think I may give north fork a try as well. NE450, I dont see a 400 grain Swift in my midway catalogue, except for the flat point which might work too, but I was thinking it was designed for 45-70, it probably would be good at around 2000 though. Did they ever have a semispitzer in 400?

As another fan of the 400 gr .458 bullets for NA game I have had good results with both the North Fork and the Swifts. the Woodleighs and Hawks both have been a little soft for my tastes. The old 400 Barnes X were my favorites but unfortunately have been discontinued.

Anyone who claims the 30-06 is ineffective has either not tried one, or is unwittingly commenting on their own marksmanship

I shot an elk with a Woodleigh 400 gr. .458 PP shot out of a .458 Lott. It worked great. There is really no need to hunt elk with anything less than a .458 Lott. Wink

The only 400 grainer Swift makes is the FN.
You can drive it faster than the 450 grain.
Trajectory between the two is very slight, even as far as 300 yards.
