I'm looking for a good powder for reduced loads for the 470 Mbogo. Anyone shooting reduced loads in a 460 Weatherby sized case with info would be great. The goal is a 540 grain bullet at 1500 fps. I have loads for 2150 and up. Thanks and take care, Dave

Dave- Try 105grs of H50BMG(90 percent case capacity) with the 540gr bullet/fed 215 primer in the 460 WBY. I've done about 1500 fps with 500gr bullets. Burns real dirty though!-Rob

I use to use 28 grains of Hi Score 700X with 400 grain Speer and they did 1350 f/s and accuracy that was superb. 460s have a hangfire problem with loads like around 60 grains 4227 and 400 grainers. The big free bore is the problem. Altghough I did get quite good results with 60 grains and cotton wool filler. 85 grains of 4046 and the 500 Hornady did just over 2000 and with top accuracy. 100 grains of IMR 4350 and the 400 grain Speer seated to the front canelure gave top accuracy and just over 2000 f/s. Seated to the rear cannelure and hangfires occured. I think there is some powder you can buy in America with a number like 5544. I think it isa bulky flake powder for reduced loads but might havea burn rate about like 4227. I think a few blokes on this forum use it in the 416 Rigby. If you can't get that powder and the 470 MBogo will let you seat the bullet so it will jam in the rifling then I think something like 4227 will get you into the 150 to 1800 range with accuracy. Hi Mike! - Surely, you must be the king of big bore reduced load experimenters! You are a gem. Mbogo - I'll check with local guy I know who also revels in the quest for low velocity.

Check out www.gmdr.com There is a lot of good information on "plinking loads. I am going to try loading 18 grains of TiteWadd with a 500 grain cast bullet in a .470 NE. Should give about 1100fps. [ 12-05-2003, 06:39: Message edited by: JBoutfishn ]

what rob said... I ran quickload (hard to get decent volume).. said h870 91 grains, with the woodleigh 550... so start at 91, and work up a tad... jeffe

If all else fails you can load it up with 140gr of FFg. That oughta get you right around 1500 fps. Will foul considerably more than the smokeless does though. Scott [ 12-05-2003, 07:13: Message edited by: ScottS ]

470MBOGO, I'll bet you are out to prove that the faster a solid goes, the deeper it penetrates. Go and get 'em. Hey, the black powder was my idea. I'll have a place to do some testing of my own after deer season. ---Catter

Thanks guys, I have the H870 and will try some of the others to get the right velocity. Should have all the results in a few weeks. Should be interesting to see how far the 540 Bridgers will penetrate at 2400 fps. Take care, Dave

Try 40-50grs of 4198 with some Dacron fiber like the guys loading light for their 470's with cast bullets. One load stated 50 grains 4198 with 570 grn Ballard bullet for 1500 fps. Might work.
