Hi guys, Just was putting to gether the last dummy rounds for the 416 taylor project, and was wondering, what bullets do most of you use. I loaded up the 400g. hornady and the 350 speer, neither of which reaches the OAL of the cartridge when crimped at the cannelure. I see the Bear Claw doesn't appear to have a cannelure, this would be a good one to put out a bit further. These are just the bullets I bought for him (my stepfather) to do sighting in work and playing around when he first gets it at Christmas. But would like to tell him what bullets to get that will work and won't eat up so much case space being set in deep. (I know, I don't have to put it to the cannelure, it just looks so funny with it out past the case) Thanks all, Red

In Australia, THE softs for the .416 Taylor are the Woodleigh "Rigby"-pattern 410gr RNSN. Its easy to match original Rigby factory ballistics (2350 fps) with ADI powders, though unnecessary in practice (my working load is 2280 fps). We also have Taipan 400gr bullets at half the price (conventional thin-jacket RNSP) and they are bombs on boars, but a little light for consistent penetration on buffs. For solids, both the Woodleigh and the Hornady are very good, whatever is cheapest on the day I guess. I don't shoot lighter projectiles, or homogenous solids, just not pukka! (I know, I'm beyond help...!) I would never seat to the cannelure with the Taylor, since most good bullets are designed for Rigby/Remington cases and seat too deeply in the Taylor case. Let magazine-box dimensions (and perhaps freebore) of your particular rifle dictate seating depth, not the bullet-manufacturers' whim!

I will make sure and have my gunsmith chamber it to the right OAL of 3.325 (that is what I have listed in my wildcat book with the write-up by wooters). Damn, I wish I hadn't seeted them to the cannelure now. And I don't have a collet big enough for my bullet puller to get them out. Oh well, the smith is much smarter than I am and will get it right, I will tell Jerry when I give him the rifle not to seat to Cannelure. Thanks for the offer Jeffe, but other than this rifle I wouldn't use it, and I am already OVER budget on this project! Initially it was going to be sans iron sights, despite me thinking that is a bad idea. See, it is a surprise so I only get to go off of what my stepfather says he would do when we start talking about guns we would like to have. But I think listening to me and then seeing some pictures of a setup he liked he decided that he would have iron sights as backup after all. Thanks guys. Red

Senor el Jeffe, If that Cannelure tool works well I'll trade you a box of 416 Rem Mag 400 gr Barnes Solids or 350 gr Swift A-Frames, your choice. Will also trade ammo for a 375 Wby or 404 Jeffrey reamer. JCN
