Anyone have one of these rifles and an accurate scale ??

I found one of these guns at a local shop . It feels lighter than my Winchester and livlier , but balance can be deceptive and make a gun feel lighter than what it really is........

The rifle has well worn bluing and a tad of surface rust , but the bore looks clean and sharp . I think I can buy it for around $350 cash.........should I pick it up ?.....Smiler

The action is worth that by itself.....I'd pick it up...Most all of them shoot very well as they had excellent barrels...It this a Whitworth with the 3 leaf rear sight and straight comb, if so it is worth even more....That is my assesment without seeing it...but if you don't like it or want it I will take it off your hands and you won't lose a dime on it....fair enough.

from a previous post

"threw the 458 on the bathroom scale, came in at either 7.5 or 8 lbs (my digital scale rounds to nearest half lb). The barrel wt calc. at Lilja site estimates about 0.5 lb wt loss between the 458 and the 375 bore for same muzzle dia.. I think Whitworth is a better package in the 375HH. The LOP measured out to about 13 6/8 ".

So the 375 might be 8 to 8.5lbs,

I had one. It went over 10 pounds without a scope.

JFF
Code:

assume:
1.5-5x Leupold scope @ 9.7oz
scope rings @ 2.3oz
4 load rounds @ 6.0oz

we get to around 8.5 lbs sans scope, unloaded.

I have two Whitworth African Express rifles, both chambered for 375 H&H, one in a synthetic stock, and one in the wood stock, both scoped in Kimber/Warne steel Qd rings and bases. They both tip the scales @ 9.5 lbs empty, and 10.2 loaded!

Should you pick it up? I'll just say, if you can get it for $350, I'll give you $550 for it in a heart beat!

they are supposed to weigh 9 to 9.5 lbs unloaded, depending on wood density, and all of them I have weighed do....

Well , I brought the gun home......$370 .....the guy hung tough at that price.......Ha .

I took it out for a few quick shots with the issue sights . It put the 300 gr Hornaday r.n. backed by H414 dead nuts on into the bull at 50 yards . Shot five 250 gr Sierras into an inch @50 , but hit 6 inches high . That's about as well as I can group with irons these days . I think the gun will shoot .

I'll have to get my hands on some mounts and see what it will do farther out . Anyone know if these Whitworths will use the same bases as FN s ??

Yes, Whitworths and other Mark X's take the same scope bases as FN's. You got a great rifle at a great price. I have one too which I'm customizing.
