Recoil & The Shooting Hand

I just dropped big dollars to purchase my first double rifle. A 500 Nitro Express. I did not think much about recoil as I have shot big bore rifles for years. When I shot the gun for the first time, I got a big surprise. While I felt the recoil on my shoulder was tolerable, I was not expecting what the recoil did to my middle finger on my shooting hand. It is all swollen and painful as the trigger guard slammed into this finger. Has anyone else experienced this. Any suggestions on how to cure this problem?
Thank you.

How about one of my old Rock Climbing tricks.....MEDICAL TAPE. Layer a couple thin strips on the top of your trigger finger (WHILE BENT), then make several loops at the front and the back of your joint.

Omnivorous_BobA good grip helps, but I resorted to taping a piece of bubble wrap to the trigger guard of my big gun. Elegant it ain't, but nothing else worked.

jeffeossoThe rifle is breaking your grip..
you may learn a better hold for that rifle...
here's what *I* do...
pull BACK with the left hand
DOWN with the right hand
slighty bunch the right shoulder
weight slighty towards the shot
and yes, i've had that finger beaten silly and black.,,, and it's a damn hard thing to hold mental discipline over the shot after it's good and hurt
you can buy and have fitted a "bumper" guard.. it's a fullly radiused edge, rather than bevel ... galazan carries them

N E 450 No2jeffe said it well. I would add that I grip the pistol grip hard and do not relax my grip, my pull back or my pull down untill after the fecoil. On other words I maintain my "hard" hold, ie. follow through.
One of those rubber or leather "bumpers" on the back of the trigger guard is a good idea.

shakariTry taping a small piece of neoprene to the relevant places on the trigger guard.....it works for me.

MJinesI had exactly the same problem. I purchased something made by Kick EEZ called a Finger EEZ. It goes on your finger like a ring and is wrapped in sorbitan (Sp?). It is the same material used in their recoil pads. I also bought one of the bumper pads but it looks goofey on the rifle and so I took it off. I am going to try the Finger EEZ in the morning on my .470 NE and will give you a report.

JKSPardon my ignorance on this as I have never shot a double but I have read about this trigger guard/finger problem before. Is this caused by the oversize guard required for a two trigger set up? I can just imagine if my Rigby and Lott trigger guards were set back an inch or so

Please enlighten this bolt rifle trash user

Do you have to have an even harder hold on a double compared to a bolt rifle of comparable power?

There are those that do, those that dream, and those that only read about it and then post their "expertise" on AR!

MJinesThe Finger EEZ is the ticket. Used it today and my finger is good as new, never felt any recoil on my middle finger. I would highly recommend it!

MacD37Try
www.connecticutshotgun.com , and do a search for "TRIGGER GUARD RUBBER CORNERS"
They are made in two forms, one held on by spring steel, and the other with a small screw! They look good on the rifle, and work! About $19
