With a little bit of experience , 1/8" square front and 1/8" to 3/16" peep you'll have a great fast and accurate peep sight !

I was very dubious of peep sights, and how effective they would be.
Well, my Rossi carbine in 44 mag had the poorest set of sights I have ever come across, with the rear 'ladder slide'on the lowest setting, the hits were 4" high at 100yrds. Also, the slide would move after every shot.
I put on a XS Ghost ring sight with square post. It is the fastest acquiring sight picture I have ever used, swings with ease and doesn't obscure any of the target, I have it zeroed so the target is atop the post.
I now have a set on my 336 in 30-30 too, that's how much I like them. I hunt lots of pigs in thick cover, a scope is just too slow to acquire the target in this scenario.
I think it's a fantastic choice, even though I don't have any on any of my own DG rifles, I like express sights insread of scopes, my only scoped DG rifle is my 375 Weatherby.

Cheers.

Hello Tanoose,

I have peep sites on 4 of my Dangerous Game Bolt Action Rifles, 375 LRE - 416 MRE - 500 SRE - 577 VSRE - and on one of my Double Rifles, 8x57R.

The sites are "fast" on target acquisition and accurate to about 150 yards. (per my old eye limitation)

This is my .505 SRE which has accompanied me on three African hunts and has accounted for one rhino, three elephants and five Cape buffalo:

The sight is a Lyman 48 with a short slide and target knobs, which I use without the screw-in insert. The front sight is a Sourdough with gold facing beveled at 45 degrees away from the rear sight, so as to catch the maximum amount of light. As a former Marine team shooter, I prefer a .100" thick front sight and sight in to hit point of aim at 100 yards.

The cartridge in the middle is the .505, flanked by the .450 C&W on the left and the .577 VSRE on the right. Buckstix's .500 SRE is virtually identical to this rifle, except it is fitted with a Buhmiller muzzle brake. The cartridge is the same, except that it uses a .510" bullet, instead of a .505".

This is the result of some fast shooting in Tanzania:

I like the ghost peep iron sights and I like the shallow V barrel mounted sights..I have my own idea about barrel mounted irons and that is I like the New England Arms gold faced post/partridge bead, sighted in to show the narrow post even with the top of the V, such as a pistol sight..its faster and more accurate than pulling a bead down in a slot...My Texas Ranger granddad told me about this and his two rifles I own are set up that way so I set my big bores up the same, and its proven extremely fast and accurate..The eye just naturally goes to that point the same as a peep sight does.

As to a ghost peep, it's another favorite of mine, and I use the Talley Slide on peep that fits the Talley bases, and carry it in my gun belt. I can slip off the scope and slide on the peep or visa versa, its an excellent set up..

Both are outstanding for aged or poor eyes.

So Ray, I also have the Talley peep and it does slide right onto the rear of the Talley grooves machined into the rib of my Simson Suhl double rifle.

Can you tell me how the sight is carried in your gun belt? Does your belt have pockets?

I have peep sights on my Dakota 458 Lott and like them, however, I have not taken any game with those sights yet. But I can't imagine them not working to my delight in the distances Buffalo are hunted.

I have a Talley peep that mounts on the rear Talley base on my .458 Lott. Love it.

Thinking of scrapping the scope idea altogether and getting a Doctor or other holographic sight for the front base, as well.

Talley peep installed in the grooves for the rear scope mount on my Simson .405 double:

!00 yard X-ring with Talley peep:

100 yard x-ring with Leupold scope:

Looks like with express sights for close up fast-and -furious and the Talley peep and/or scope for further out, my .405 is ready for safari!

The only thing to criticise about that well used FN in the trigger safety, and that is an easy fix.

Thinking about the same peep sight for my 375 Ruger Guide Gun. Right now have a Leupold VX3 2.5-8x36mm with Alaskan Arms quick detach rings. Have it sighted in dead on at 200yds with 300gr. Accubond handload. My elk load. Would have the peep sight sighted in with the Woodleigh 350gr. PP handload. Heavy bush and heavy animal load. This would be a cheaper route then another set of Alaskan Arms rings and a Leupold VX3i 1.5-5x20mm scope.

Talking about express sights. Can any of you guys get me the 1/8" front bead for a CZ550 Safari Magnum? I actually need a couple, can't source them anywhere that will ship to Australia.
Sorry to hijack the thread.

CRshelton,
Sorry for the late reply..

I carry my Talley peep in a modified old cell phone holster on my cartridge belt. Sometimes I carry it in my Cinch/Wrangler pockets.

I wonder if the grip caps that hold a front sight couldn't be modified to hold the Talley Peep. That's on my bucket list if I ever get around to it.

I have used these sights on my Ruger 416 and Ruger 375, their earlier model did not come with a ghost aperture so I had to drill it out, now you can get the ghost aperture post, that is the way to go on a DG rifle.

I guess I don't understand the difference? They are all an aperture that you are looking through?
The real advantage to any aperture sight for me is that you don't look at the ring you just assume that by looking through it you are centered and put your front sight "on" the intended victim and pull the trigger, done...
For me this is way faster than traditional "irons" where you have to re focus between rear sight front sight and intended target.

Theory is that the human eye seeks the center of the aperture and you only focus on two things by using the peep or "ghost" type if you will, front sight and target. Someone with knowledge of "eyes" could give much more detailed explanation, but have been told that it is difficult if not impossible for humans to truly focus on three items-rear sight notch, front sight bead/blade and target??? Shoot/shot peep sights for years in High Power matches and can do better than with optics.

The hole doesn't make it a ghost ring ,it's the ring . A thin ring is not much noticed by the shooter but the eye automatically centers to the ring. The ring must be close to the eye [the effect doesn't work on a handgun - too far from the eye !] The thin ring doesn't cover up anything around the target like a target peep does.
Thus "eliminating " the rear sight you just put the front on the target and go ! Fast and accurate !
I've tried to explain this before but perhaps this one is better. Smiler

I have peep's on my 458 Win Mag, 222 mod 70, Big Horn Armory 500 S&W, and my Marlin 39. The other day I shot a 1" group @100 with the BHA, kill most every ptarmigan & grouse with the 39, and have taken caribou, wolves, wolverine, etc with the 222. Except for the fact that most bear and moose hunting is usually done in poor light, peep's would cover me fine,, sheep are the exception! My wife and dog tracked this guy and he jumped up about 15' in front of us! 450gr Northfork !!

I am uncertain whether this information will prove useful. I owned a Pedersoli Kodiak Safari hammer double rifle. Its abominable [middle] rear two-leaf sight was removed, a Brockman steel W&E adjustable, wing protected aperture sight was installed on barrels' top rib immediately forward of barrels' break-off. From a rest unsupported the rifle was consistently able to cloverleaf a right-left at 50 yards. Despite weighing slightly more than 10 pounds, target acquisition was at least as quick as anyone using any rifle I have witnessed - that is, QUICK! This sight is small, light, extremely well made and durable. And, surprisingly, the rifle was more attractive with it than without it.

FYI: Normal load was 775-grain conical, 110 grains Goex FFg, CCI #11 Magnum cap. Oh, yes, I weigh 135 pounds, but I controlled the rifle rather than it overwhelming me.

The Safari was disposed of to fund a built-to-order rifle that is nearly ready for delivery.

Hope this helps.
