Hi!

I wonder what velocity you can get from a 45-70 built on a Ruger no1 with 350 grains and 400 grains bullets?

I have seem that they load that caliber in Ruger no1 to 2100 to 2200 fps.

Best regards
Kalle

I have a number 3, which is essentially the same thing, I have some 350 grain Hornady's loaded in it and will try to remember to chronograph them saturday. They are an initial loading though, so I haven't worked up anything yet, I just like to shoot it, haven't tried getting it ready for hunting.

I'll let you know.

Those velocities should be easily obtainable. The .450 Marlin is reportedly reaching those speeds in the lever gun. .450 loading data would be a good starting point.

As a backwards way of looking at it, a 458 win mag will push 350's 2400-2500 fps, and the 45-70 at the same pressures will be 200 fps shy of the win mag. You ought to be able to push 350's 2200 fps, though I don't think it prudent to venture in the 2300 fps range.

Karl-Erik,

Although not what you asked, in my 45-70 No.1 I use 56 grains RL-7, Fed 210 Primer, & Remington Brass under a 300 Grain Barnes X bullet for 2425 FPS. While doing load development I went up to 63 grains, but recoil was fierce, and accuracy poor.

Please approach from below, as the Barnes manual lists 50 grains as max. Interestingly, the Alliant manual lists only 24,700 cup for the 50 grain load when using RL-7 with the 300 grain Hornaday. This led me to conclude that the barnes manual was well underloaded as far as 45-70 loads in a Ruger 1 go.

I've never got around to using a heavier bullet than the 300 grain Barnes X, because it is so effective on game, and flat shooting as well (as least for a 45-70).

Good luck,

Bob

Interesting,
I use 55 grains of reloader 7 over a 300 grain RCBS cast gas checked bullet lubed with LBT blue and get 2325 out of my ruger Number one. I get 2 inch groups and no leading. If you don't think there isn't anything on this continent that won't fall to that load, think again.

regards,
Graycg
