jeffeossointroducing the 45/70 NITRO
(george, please don't shoot me at the end of the month)
It's been done before... Maybe, but it's cheap.
What is it?
Nothing but a long throated 45/70, 3.162 OAL
WHY? jeffe, WHY?
To shoot barnes 450gr TSX bullets in high proof 45/70s
Okay, i'll ask again, WHY?
Because I am CHEAP
Here's the deal,
If you take a 45/70 and load it to 2.55 with this bullet, you have 35gr of usable case left.
At 3.162, that leave .458 in the case, and 60gr of useful capacity. (the winmag has about 66gr at nominal length) Using 45/70 dies and brass.. and if you have a handful of PMC ammo, it goes band. No 3" or 45 RCBS dies and brass.. it's "JUST" a 45/70.
What's the difference in performance?
at an estimated 47500psi, the 450 TSX goes 2000fps in the 45/70 Nitro
In the 45/70 "govt" same bullet, abotu 1640.
Yeah, I am planning this for the spartan, but my handirifle will be a decent test bed

Might be interesting to try in say a 458 Lott on a Ruger #1.

Hog KillerI'll feed mine a steady diet of Remmy 405s. @ 2.82" OAL, 2000 - 2100fps. PIGS ARE GOING TO DIE HARD.

Now what of 450gr NF CP, and big black bovines

That would depend on what action type it was built on. The 45-70 Nitro is intended for the Spartan SxS, not a lever gun.

WJMI didn't need to do anything. I bought a bolt action Lee-Enfield #4 converted by Gibbs (others Gibbs did were only #1 mark III) to 45/70 with a 22" heavy "Navy Arms" barrel. It would take a 500gr JRN bullet loaded to a 2.93 OAL or a 550 gr very flat nose bullet loaded to 2.82. I never pushed the 500's beyond 1,750 fsp, however.
05 October 2006, 08:24
.366torqueHog Killer, that would be the rifle in question. Sorry I didn't clarify at first. I gave pause to realize just how many different configurations there are to launch a 45/70.

.366torqueAs mentioned before, el jeffe is cheap (& so am I) and 45/70 brass is dirt cheap!

You messed up and said Handi-Rifle.
Excuse my ignorance(my Wife certainly does!)I have a BC. What is the preferred method to lengthen the throat to accmodate that nifty looking Barnes bullet?
This sounds like a perfectly logical waste of money and time to kill popcans. Count me in!
Let us know how it works out.

wrongtargetZeke, I'm gonna do all of my .45-70 Handis and BC, they all have super short throats, cost is about $30 after all shipping is paid to rent a .458" throater. I've rented a .358" throater from 4D before to do my .35 Remington Handi, it takes about a minute or less to do it by hand, depending on how deep want to go.

45/70 Govt.Just an observation here. Your cases look buckled at the base of the bullet. I've found this problem is solved by belling the case enough that the bullet seats in the neck without any "jiggling" of the press to seat into the brass.
Also, if you're going to "ream" a 45/70 Govt. why not just ream it out to 460 Weatherby?
05 October 2006, 12:17
500grainsWhy not spend the money on hunting instead of on this?

05 October 2006, 16:29
jeffeossoWhy not a 450 alaskan? BC I am CHEAP!!! yes, you can get more out of that case.. but you can't use 45/70 brass and dies.. and would have to buy a $$$ reamer.
The cases where just made up from junk laying on the bench.
Dan
$120 MAX for the conversion reamer (and I already have a 45 throater).. so, in my case, I can prove concept for 15 mins of time, zero dollars...

but I do find that comment kinda funny, considering your normal tastes in guns.

PeterI might be interested in trying this in my Ruger #1. The only problem is that recoil is pretty brutal with max loads. It would be even worse with this modification!

Dan, for this kind of money, that would be squrrel, rabbit, or hogs. Spartan rifle, reamer work, and some ammo, will be LESS than the tip most folks give their PH on a DG hunt.
Besides, were else can you come up with a true SxS truck gun. Jackrabbits, boar hogs, and black bears would all be a FUN hunt with this set up.

500grainsHey, for $120 I could shoot 10 pheasants! Just offering possibilities...
05 October 2006, 21:50
PeterHogkiller, no I haven't. Any suggestions? I don't think it is just the recoil pad. I think the stock configuration may be at fault, but having said that I am open to trying a different recoil pad.
Peter.

jeffeossoDan,
you must be a better shot than me?!?! I can't hit pheasants with an iron sighted big bore rifle!
05 October 2006, 23:16
Paul HI keep eyeing the 12 ga coach guns, well actually the slightly longer ones with the screw in chokes. With rifled chokes they are a po-mans paradox, and there's always 00 if the regulation sucks.
I just can't get too excited about the 45-70 double. To me a 12 bore would be much more impressive. Hmm, gotta remember to pick one up

Rules me out to, I don't have a Pheasant rifle

Been thinking about a pheasant hunt in the Texas panhandle, sounds like fun.

jeffeossoOh,
perhaps we haven't properly amortorized the conversion reamer to 45/70 Nitro

It will probably cut 30 chamber throats, before requiring a resharpening...
at $4 bucks a barrel ($8 bucks a spartan), well, lads, that's going to be the CHEAPEST 200fps you can ever buy!!
yes, i'll be glad to loan it out, once the Texans and Bubbas have dulled it to the first resharpening
