I have this stainless Mdl 70 action lying around here, that I was going to build something 375 on.

Now, with the Stanless 375 Ruger Alaskan- which somewhat duplicates what I want built- I wonder if I should bohter getting one built?

(other than the cool facotr of saying "I have another custom rifle")

Thoughts?

If the action is already a magnum action and long enough for the H&H round go that route.....

If the action is a magnum action but standard length build a 375 Ruger.

If it's a classic in 30-06 size you can still build the ruger round but will need a bit more work.

I wouldn't have a Ruger in the house.....anything is better!

Apparently the Ruger M77 Hawkeye Alaskan is not going to be stainless, but a coated chrome-moly afterall.

Interesting..i wonder why they went that route? Coating it woudl seem to be more expensive and maybe add some extra challenges than just going stainless, but I'm not a rifle manufacturer..

Makes no sense to me why they didn';t go stainless i think thats what alot of people were hoping for , me included. Now i';ll look twice at the Remington XTR in 375 RUM.

I meant the xcr model which is a coated stainless

I hope they will eventually make a stainless rifle. I don't have a problem keeping rust off the outside of a rifle, even living here on the west coast. My main problem with corrosion is in the bore where an outside coating will not help.

Your expense for the barrel and chambering will be very reasonable.
You can then sink some money into the stock and optics appropriate for the inclimate weather where you plan to hunt.

The acion I currently have has a 7STW barel attached to it, so a H&H woudl certainly fit. Originaly, I was goinng to get a 375 H&H or a 375 Weatherby built on it, but the 375 Ruger really interests me.

On a practical note, the H&H woudl be better for me since I already have Redding dies, new brass etc...But I've already had the H&H and it's not always about being practical, now is it?

Did winchester make a 30-06 lenght action *and* a full Magnum lenth action? IIRC they are the same size.

Just wondering if the aciton woudl be appropriate for the Ruger, as I see the cartridge is quite a bit shorter.

gatehouse..... want to get rid of the m70 7stw???? im looking for 1.... i have several m70 30-06 lenght guns... .243, 25-06, 30-06...the 243 and 30-06 are of 1968 vintage...25-06 is a featherweight...

The M70 will fit a .375 H&H, so no advantage I can see going to a .375 Ruger.

jimatcat- Probably more trouble than it's worth, as I am in Canada.

jstevens- A 375 Ruger may have longer case life than the H&H, which would be an advantage, plus I have had a H&H and not a Ruger, and the Ruger interests me, which is more than enough reason to get one.

Get a used stainless Ruger M77 Mk II in 7mmRM, 300WinMag, or .338 WinMag: cheap.

Rebarrel + Replace trigger = Better than Hawkeye Alaskan.

gatehouse, the magazine will already be 3.650" for the STW, but the 375/416 classic actions are a little different in the rear bridge. They will have 0.330" spaced rear scope holes, while the 7mmRM/300WM etc actions have the 0.860" spaced holes and a longer rear bridge.

It has been debated here before whether or not it is necessary to shorten the rear bridge when converting a std short mag M70 to a H&H lenght M70, but it's not a big deal to do it in the scheme of things.

One thing to consider, is to try and stuff 4 rounds of std 375 H&H into that action, a buddys classic M70 will easily, and if it will, then that would swing my decision on the H&H vs Ruger

I tried the magazine some time ago, and I blieve it will hold 4 H&H rounds. 3 At least...

I wouldn't consider the 375 Ruger until you see ammunition on your dealer's shelves...could be next year with the issues they are having trying to make good on the velocity promises, etc.
