I bought a CZ 550 .375 H&H last December, mainly because of the high praise CZ's were getting on this board and the price couldn't be beat. Thanks.

I love my gun just the way it is. Hog back stock and all. I have read all of the posts on the 416's and 458's splitting stocks, and I have read what to do to protect the stocks from splitting.

I do not want to change anything or add any weight. So my question is, do I need to reinforce the stock on a .375 H&H?
Does the .375H&H split big stocks like the ones provided on the CZ's?

Thanks,

David

David Just to be sure I would bed the action lug and barrel lug in Devcon and relieve the tang if need be. I also floated my cz .375 to the first lug. I just purchased a .458 winnie for a lott coversion I will have that double cross bolted etc. No need for that on the .375 but a little reinforcement in the way of a decent Devcon bedding job will ensure the safety of your "hogs back" I likem to mate I only replaced the stock on my .416 CZ as I was #1 at one stage synthetic crazy #2 I was led to belive it was "needed" I don't really regret it as I have one large bore rifle with an allweather stock I suppose. But I genuinely like the look of the hogs back the hogsback is in no way as prounced as it looks on the webiste when you actually handle the gun.

I'm with PC. I LIKE that stock. I have a really beautiful piece of wood, and in the sunlight, it's just fantastic.

I'm going to put a muzzle brake on it, and, at the time, I think I'm going to have another lug added, and the gun bedded.

I plan on shooting this gun as much as most shoot their 30-06, so it's my go to gun. Can't do that at current level of recoil...

When I purchased mine in .375 H&H I had originally planned on replacing the Bavarian style stock with a McMillan. However, after shooting it, I now really like that style of stock. The only thing that I have done to mine is give it a decent bedding job.

Thanks for your responses.

I bought one hundred 270 grain SP Remington cartridges and 60 300gr TBBC Federal Cartridges when I bought the gun. I haven't shot the Federal's yet because the remingtons shoot so well. Ran into 5 boxes of new (but discontinued) Remington 300gr metal case (solids) ammo for $14 dollars a box on a clearence rack. Bought them all. Got the Lee Collet dies and 100 - 300 gr hornady round nose softs waiting to be seated on top of some Reloader 15. Got some Warne QD rings holding a 2.5 Leupold for it also, but prefer the express sights 95% of the time.
This gun is nice, especially considering the price.

I took the stock off to take some creep out of the trigger and thought everything looked good for a 375, but I guess yall are right. An ounce of prevention...

Thanks again.

Has anybody ever actually split a stock with factory .375 loads?

When I start handloading I will probably only load to about 2250 fps.

I have a 500 A2 still alive on a CZ550 stock after 500 rds. Here is what to do. I add a forewrd crossbolt behind the action recoil lug, Add a REAL barrel mounted recoil lug ( I've posted lots of pics before). STEELBED the barrel lug, the action lug and the tang. If you follow my directions you'll be fine if not cracked stock in less than 100 rds.-Rob

Rob - What contour barrel do you have? Can you give me the link to look at the recoil lug? Thanks - KMule

Make sure everything is tight. Problem with big bores and wood is they tend to sit a long time, and the wood shrinks away from the action.

Result is the action gets a running start at the stock, battering it apart.

Rob is pretty much on with what I've heard from gunsmiths about CZ's as well. I'm going to make sure next week...
